Last season’s Champions League finalists Manchester City will once again look to conquer Europe under Pep Guardiola in 2021/22, but they have been drawn into a rather ominous looking group with 2019/20 semi-finalists RB Leipzig, Lionel Messi’s Paris Saint-Germain and Belgian champions Club Brugge.
Guardiola begins Group A at home, with a new-look Leipzig under Jesse Marsch travelling to the Etihad in midweek. The American coach succeeded Julian Nagelsmann in the Saxony hotseat but has struggled in these early stages, losing three of Leipzig’s opening four games in the Bundesliga.
It hasn’t exactly been plain sailing for City domestically, either. Following that 1-0 loss to Chelsea in the final last season, Guardiola’s men then lost 1-0 to Leicester City in the Community Shield and 1-0 to Tottenham Hotspur in their Premier League curtain-raiser, though they have won their previous three games.
This will arguably be one of the tightest Premier League title races in years, with Liverpool looking strong once again, Chelsea reinvigorated under Thomas Tuchel and Manchester United boasting a certain Cristiano Ronaldo, but Guardiola will not want to take his eye off the Champions League, his final frontier as City boss.
Man City vs RB Leipzig: Match Stats
Of the 25 managers to haven taken charge of at least 50 Champions League matches, Pep Guardiola currently boasts the best win percentage in the competition’s history (63%), and he faces Marsch, who was famously in charge of Red Bull Salzburg during the 2019/20 campaign. That side, which included the likes of Erling Haaland, Dominik Szoboszlai, Patson Daka and Takumi Minamino, netted 16 goals in the group stages, the same as City that season.
One player who could look to make an impression here for the hosts is Ferran Torres. The Spaniard has scored in four of his six games in the Champions League for City (four goals), while he has also averaged a goal every 90 minutes for the club in the competition, netting four times in just 360 minutes on the pitch.
