It’s been Man City’s long-term goal to win the Champions League, an aim towards which the owners have put in a lot of money. In recent seasons, Man City have gone close, beaten finalists in 2021 and then losing to eventual winners Real Madrid in the semi-finals last season.
So far this season Pep Guardiola’s side have gone unbeaten in the tournament with four wins and three draws, including 1-1 away in Germany in the first leg of this tie. However, 2023 has been an interesting year for Man City on the pitch (as well as off it) with two defeats in the Premier League which has seen them lose some ground on leaders Arsenal, as well as a disappointing draw against Nottingham Forest. Since the first leg, though, City have been flawless, winning all four of their games across all competitions, including a hard-earned 1-0 triumph away at Crystal Palace at the weekend.
RB Leipzig, meanwhile, finished second in their group with a decent record. Placed alongside Shakhtar Donetsk, Celtic and Real Madrid, RB Leipzig managed four wins and two defeats, both of which came in their first two games.
Bottom of the group after two matches, RB Leipzig won their next four including a famous victory over Real Madrid to secure second place, finishing just one point behind Los Blancos. Since the first leg, Die Roten Bullen have won two and lost one of their three Bundesliga matches, beating Eintracht Frankfurt (2-1) and Borussia Monchengladbach (3-0) either side of a 2-1 defeat to fellow title chasers Borussia Dortmund.

Erling Haaland has scored six goals in five career appearances so far against RB Leipzig, with no side feeling his wrath more to date. Sure, the Norwegian drew a blank in the first leg, but he’s hit two goals and an assist in three appearances since then and looks primed to make the difference on Tuesday.
RB Leipzig ended a run of three games without a clean sheet across all competitions against Gladbach on Saturday, but in the Champions League, they’ve kept just two shutouts from seven attempts, conceding 10 goals along the way. They’re potent enough themselves in front of goal, but might well leave themselves open for punishment by Man City.
