Aston Villa vs Man City: Predictions
Aston Villa’s season had seemed to be drifting into a dangerous, relegation-threatened territory under previous boss Dean Smith until the club moved to replace him with Steven Gerrard in November after a run of five consecutive Premier League defeats culminated with a defeat to Southampton at St Mary’s Stadium.
Gerrard couldn’t have got off to a better start at Villa Park, with back-to-back wins over Brighton & Hove Albion and Crystal Palace. Manchester City will provide an altogether different test (perhaps the most difficult of Gerrard’s managerial career so far) but a third straight win and a victory against the champions would undoubtedly make some headlines on Thursday morning.
It remains to be seen whether former Villa hero Jack Grealish will be returning to his former stomping ground on Wednesday night. After leaving the Midlands for Manchester this summer, the 26 year old will have been desperate to return to his former club, but is currently an injury doubt after picking up a knock on international duty with England.
His Citizens side will make the trip to Villa Park in high spirits though after Sunday’s 2-1 win over West Ham United extended their winning run to five games in all competitions – a run which has seen them progress in the Champions League and rise up to second in the table, with just one point separating them from the current leaders Chelsea.
Aston Villa vs Man City: Match Stats
Gabriel Jesus has played a more consistent role in Manchester City’s side this season and is currently leading the way for assists in the Premier League for his side with five. The Brazilian also laid on the equaliser for Raheem Sterling in last week’s comeback win over Paris Saint-Germain and he’s available at 10/3 to earn yet another assist in this game with Virgin Bet.
Aston Villa have looked more dangerous going forward under Steven Gerrard in their last two matches, scoring twice in each of those wins over Brighton and Crystal Palace. City have won their last two matches whilst conceding in both and they have a terrific record in this fixture over recent seasons, so we’re backing an away win with both teams to score here.
