Man City vs Man Utd 2024 Community Shield prediction: Will Ten Hag extend Guardiola’s surprising streak?

English football’s traditional curtain-raiser sees Premier League champions Manchester City take on FA Cup winners Manchester United.

Man City vs Man Utd latest prediction

Man City to beat Man United on penalties

Why? Four of the last seven finals saw the game decided by a penalty shootout after full-time. Manchester City have lost three of their last four penalty shoot-outs (against Real Madrid, Arsenal and West Ham).

All eyes will be on the home of football when City and United continue their rivalry. It will be the 194th Manchester derby to take place in all competitions and the third to take place in the Community Shield. Manchester United won both previous meetings, in 1956 (when the competition was known as the Charity Shield) and 2011.

Holders Arsenal did not qualify for this edition and so cannot defend their title, as they were knocked out in the third round of the FA Cup and finished second in the Premier League.

Pep Guardiola’s men qualified for this recent edition after winning a fourth consecutive Premier League title, while Erik ten Hag’s side prevented the English champions from recording another double when they emerged as 2-1 winners in May to win their 13th FA Cup crown.

The showdown between Man City and Man Utd occurs at 3pm on Saturday 10th August at Wembley Stadium in London.

In terms of historical success, United have both appeared in and won the most Community Shield matches, winning 21 of their 30 appearances, although this includes four shared titles in 1965, 1967, 1977, and 1990; their most recent title came in 2016.

City has participated in 15 Community Shield matches, including the last three. Those have all  ended in defeat, however. It makes them the first team since United in 2001 to suffer such a streak. Overall, they have won six Community Shield titles, with the most recent victory in 2019. City hopes to avoid matching United’s undesirable record of four consecutive Shield defeats.

More than a friendly

In some circles, the Community Shield is still regarded as part of the pre-season preparations, so it’s viewed as a friendly game rather than a competitive one, even if a genuine piece of silverware is on the line. Consequently, managers with one eye on the Premier League kicking off shortly treat this fixture as an opportunity to showcase new faces and exhaust the number of substitutions allowed.

It perhaps explains City’s recent record, which has seen them lose three finals in a row. In two of those finals, he started his reserve goalkeeper, Stefan Ortega, who had joined in the summer of 2022, staying on the bench in that year’s game with Ederson in goal as Liverpool emerged as 3-1 winners. The previous year, Leicester City were narrow 1-0 victors, and the most recent saw them lose on penalties against Arsenal. Indeed, four of the last seven finals saw the game decided by a penalty shootout after full-time.

Guardiola will again lock horns with Ten Hag, with this being their seventh meeting. Ten Hag ended a three-game losing streak in May, which perhaps saved his job. The powers that be subsequently extended his contract as Manchester United men’s first-team manager until June 2026. He’s reportedly refreshing his coaching staff, with club legend Ruud van Nistelrooy joining as part of it.

Van Nistelrooy, who registered 150 goals in 219 appearances for Man Utd, was most recently in charge of PSV Eindhoven, where he played a role in developing several young forwards, which could be good news for the likes of Alejandro Garnacho and Rasmus Højlund.

Four big talents Van Nistelrooy helped develop:

    • Cody Gakpo: A PSV academy graduate, Gakpo only made 24 appearances under Van Nistelrooy before departing for Liverpool, but that was a spell! The Dutch winger registered 13 goals and created 17 for his teammates.
    • Xavi Simons: Heralded for great things back when he was coming through Barcelona’s esteemed youth setup, Simons left for PSG in search of regular playing time, but that never came. A loan spell at PSV put into motion the burgeoning career he’s currently enjoying. Simons created 12 goals and bagged 20 under Van Nistelrooy’s guidance.
    • Noni Madueke: This was a brief relationship, as Madueke played nine games before Chelsea recalled him. Even so, it was enough to learn so much under Van Nistelrooy’s tutelage.
    • Johan Bakayoko: A young Belgian forward destined for a bright future, Bakayoko exploded under Van Nistelrooy’s successor, Peter Bosz, but the foundation was laid in 32 appearances that saw him yield six goals and five assists.

    Man City latest team news

As of this moment, Manchester City have not made any signings in the summer transfer window. Josh Adam and Jamal Baptiste have been released from their contracts, while Tommy Doyle, Taylor Harwood-Bellis, and Lewis Fiorini all departed the club. Guardiola has retained last season’s champions, including top scorer Erling Haaland (38 goals in 45 appearances) and the reigning FWA Footballer of the Year, Phil Foden. Foden was one of three City players who played 50 or more times for the club last season: Julián Álvarez and Rodri were the other two.

    Man Utd latest team news

After much speculation, Ten Hag has retained his position as the Man Utd boss. His triumphant win over City at Wembley in May may have earned him a reprieve. However, United has said goodbye to Raphael Varane, Anthony Martial, Brandon Williams, and Jonny Evans, all of whom have been released from the club. To date, no major acquisitions have been made, but aside from the aforementioned Varane, Martial, and Evans, no one who regularly featured last season has departed.
