Things are so tight in the middle of the Championship table, with just eight points separating third-placed Middlesbrough and Reading down in 16th – a joy for the neutrals when it comes to the play-off battle. Current sitting just outside the play-off spots in seventh, are Luton, who are only behind Norwich City on goal difference. And, importantly, they have a game in hand.

This is Luton’s game in hand and a win would lift them up to at least fourth, ahead of rivals Watford, in the push for Premier League football. A big enough win would see them in third, but right now it feels as though any win will do. The Hatters have put themselves in a promising position thanks to a run of four wins from their last five matches which includes a victory over Norwich.

The season isn’t going as well for Cardiff, unfortunately, and the Welsh club look closer to dropping to League One than they are returning to the Premier League. Cardiff are currently just one place and three points clear of the drop zone have have played a game more than two of the teams below them. It’s also worth noting that after this game, they will have played two games more.

With just seven wins this season, only two sides have won fewer games than Cardiff in the Championship, while only two have lost more than their 13. They go into this game off the back of a poor run of results too, now winless in their past 11 games across all competitions – nine if we’re just looking at the Championship.

Luton vs Cardiff match stats

Luton and Cardiff have two of the best defences in the Championship this season, which some may find strange given the latter’s positioning. But only three clubs have conceded fewer goals than Luton, and only five (including Luton) fewer than Cardiff. Cardiff’s big problem is their attack, with 21 goals scored the fewest in the Championship so far this season – it’s hard to see them breaking down a defence which has the lowest Expected Goals on Target Conceded at 20.96.

Up front for Luton, Carlton Morris has been the man for goals, scoring 11 in the Championship so far – with only three players having netted more. A summer arrival from Barnsley, Morris has also added four assists, with only three players managing more direct goal involvements.
