Liverpool cannot directly qualify for the last 16 of the Champions League this week, but victory over Rangers combined with Napoli beating Ajax would put them on the brink. Jurgen Klopp’s men have been suffering in the Premier League this season with only two wins from their opening eight matches, drawing four and losing two. Their second league defeat of the season came at the weekend, beaten 3-2 by Arsenal at the Emirates, to leave them in the bottom half of the Premier League table and 14 points behind the early leaders.
Things are looking slightly better in the Champions League, however. After losing their opening game 4-1 to Napoli, Liverpool have bounced back with wins over Ajax and Rangers to currently sit second in Group A, three points clear of the Dutch champions in third.
Rangers domestically and in Europa have been night and day this season. Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side are currently second in the Scottish Premiership, two points behind leaders Celtic with their only defeat of the season coming against their Glasgow rivals, and they go into this match off the back of a 4-0 win over St Mirren.
But Rangers’ return to the Champions League has been nothing short of a nightmare. In their first game back in the group stage after a 12-year absence was a 4-0 defeat to Ajax in Amsterdam, and in their very next match they were beaten 3-0 by Napoli. And, of course, last week they left Anfield with a 2-0 defeat, meaning three matches have brought three defeats, nine goals conceded and none scored. At this point, Rangers will need a lot of work to even qualify for the Europa League.

As alluded to, Rangers are yet to score in the Champions League this season, being shut out by both Ajax, Napoli and Liverpool. Although Liverpool have struggled in defence this season, the occasion of the Champions League appears to have been too much for Rangers.
At the other end of the pitch, Mohamed Salah found the net from the penalty spot last time out against Rangers for his 35th goal in the Champions League for Liverpool. Only Didier Drogba (36 for Chelsea) and Sergio Aguero (36 for Manchester City) have scored more for a Premier League side in the competition.
