Echoes of the 2005 and 2007 Champions League finals reverberated around the room when the draw was made in Istanbul last month, as Liverpool and AC Milan meet for the first time since they locked horns in Athens 14 years ago, with this first contest taking place at a now capacity Anfield crowd.
Incredibly, these two aristocratic European clubs have only ever met twice, in those aforementioned finals. Rafa Benitez’s men famously came from three goals down in Turkey’s 2005 showpiece to beat Carlo Ancelotti’s Rossoneri on penalties, in what is now remembered fondly on Merseyside as the ‘Miracle of Istanbul’.
Two years later, a Filippo Inzaghi-inspired Milan exacted revenge and beat Liverpool 2-1 in Greece. Now, over a decade later, these two final magnets renew their mid-noughties rivalry, with Jurgen Klopp welcoming Stefano Pioli, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Co to Anfield, with full-capacity stadiums once again allowed.
The Reds have made a promising start to 2021/22 in the Premier League as they currently sit third and level on points (and goal difference) with current pace-setters Manchester United, while Milan likewise are level on points in Serie A with the table-toppers (Roma), with both teams currently unbeaten.
Liverpool vs AC Milan: Match Stats
The days of Steven Gerrard dictating the tempo and slicing defences open, and Inzaghi caressing the ball home nonchalantly are over, but there are new heroes at each club. For Liverpool, Sadio Mane enters this contest having scored 19 Champions League goals in 42 appearances. Should the sensational Senegal international score on Wednesday, then he will become the fourth African player to score 20 goals in the competition, after Samuel Eto’o, Didier Drogba and Mohamed Salah.
For Milan, the narrative will be dominated by Zlatan Ibrahimovic. The Swedish legend travels to Anfield having notched 48 Champions League goals in 120 games, nine of which came during his first stint for AC Milan between 2010 and 2012. He also scored the last time he played Liverpool, netting an 84th-minute equaliser in Man Utd’s 1-1 draw with their rivals at Old Trafford in January 2017.

Liverpool vs AC Milan: Head to Head
23 May 2007 – Liverpool 1-2 AC Milan – Champions League Final
25 May 2005 – AC Milan 3-3 Liverpool – Champions League Final
Two iconic fixtures. That 2005 final remains arguably the greatest in the history of the competition. Liverpool looked dead and buried at half time as Milan cantered to a 3-0 lead at the interval. However, the Reds rallied after the break and brought the score back to 3-3, thanks to goals from Gerrard, unlikely hero Vladimir Smicer (who also scored his spot kick in the shootout) and Xabi Alonso. Benitez’s boys then beat Milan on penalties, with Jerzy Dudek famously saving an Andriy Shevchenko 12-yarder to win the match. Milan did, however, win two years later, with Inzaghi notching a brace to bring ‘Big Ears’ back to Italy.
