Sunderland vs Lincoln: Predictions

As a former Premier League giant, Sunderland are always seen to be among the frontrunners in League One and the expectation among the fanbase is high. As such, anything less than victory in the Playoffs and bringing their three-season stay in the third tier to an end will be deemed as a failure at the Stadium of Light.

However, the Black Cats are going to have to come from behind in this tie in order to secure a spot in the Wembley final after a terrific Lincoln performance in the first-leg. Goals from Tom Hopper and Brennan Johnson in the second half put the Imps in the driving seat before their trip to the Stadium of Light

Lee Johnson has already come in for criticism from sections of the Sunderland fanbase, who will be returning to the Stadium of Light on Saturday afternoon. That said, this tie isn’t beyond a Black Cats squad that possesses the likes of Lynden Gooch and Charlie Wyke – even if they have won just one of their last ten league fixtures.

But undoubtedly it’s the visitors in the driving seat here. Their second-half of the season has been inconsistent and with such a young squad, boss Michael Appleton may be worried that they will feel the pressure if the hosts score the first goal. Can the Imps hold strong?

Sunderland vs Lincoln: Match Stats

Goals aren’t to be expected here. The visitors will hope to keep things tight in order to secure their lead, and they’ve done well on that front of late, keeping clean sheets in six of their last nine games. Three of Sunderland’s last four matches have seen fewer than three goals scored and although we expect the hosts to grind out a win here, we don’t expect many goals to be scored in the process.

Morgan Rogers has enjoyed a fine spell with Lincoln City thus far and his energetic style caused the Sunderland defence problems throughout the first leg of this tie. The Manchester City loanee made five tackles in that game, more than any other player on the pitch and he’ll hope his pressing can lead to a seventh goal for the club here.
