Leicester’s quest to return to the Premier League at the first time of asking begins with a home tie against last season’s beaten play-off finalists Coventry. The Foxes nine year stay in the top flight finally came to an end in May and new boss Enzo Maresca will be looking to get off to a positive start to the campaign, especially at home.

Coventry, meanwhile, will need to pick themselves up after their penalty defeat to Luton in the play-off final at Wembley and go again, but it won’t be easy without last season’s top goalscorer Viktor Gyokeres, who recently left the club for Sporting. They will be hoping for a much better start to their campaign this time around, after failing to win any of their first seven matches last term (D3, L4).

This will be the first meeting between the local rivals in nine years, with the Foxes getting the better of Coventry in each of the last two matches between them.

Leicester vs Coventry team news

Leicester have been busy in the transfer market so far, with new signings Harry Winks,  Callum Doyle, Mads Hermansen and Stephy Mavidiyi, who has been given the number 10 shirt after James Maddison’s departure, all looking for a starting place on the opening day. Conor Coady, however will have to wait for his debut after being ruled out.

Jamie Vardy, Kelechi Iheanacho and Patson Daka will all be fighting for a place up front, but defenders Wout Faes and James Justin are both doubts.

Ellis Simms has the incredibly tough job of replacing Viktor Gykores’ goals in this Coventry side after his recent move from Everton, while exciting young full-back Milan van Ewijk will be chomping at the bit to show what he can do in English football. Callum O’Hare and Fabio Tavares both miss the trip to their local rivals, while new goalkeeper Brad Collins may be thrown straight into the side with Ben Wilson doubtful.
