After a stellar start to the 2022/23 Premier League season, Leeds United have hit an autumnal snag, with the pressure just beginning to crank on Jesse Marsch, who is winless in seven matches and caught in the riptide of a three-game losing run. Fulham, by contrast, are on the up, recently putting Aston Villa to the sword in a 3-0 win, which proved the final straw for Steven Gerrard, who was sacked shortly after that defeat in the capital.

It was a disheartening defeat for Villa, and on the same night, Leeds United suffered a similar fate, coming up short 2-0 against then bottom club Leicester City away from home. Marsch would have earmarked that contest at the King Power against a struggling Foxes as an opportunity to produce a statement performance and get his side’s season back up and running. Instead, his problems have only exacerbated after falling to defeat.

Fulham entered their Thursday night clash against Villa needing a win. Marco Silva’s men were on a three-game winless run that included back-to-back defeats to Newcastle and West Ham. The Cottagers responded, and then some. Aleksandar Mitrovic continued his red-hot form, while the Londoners looked slick and rhythmic in possession. If Marsch was looking for an easy game to placate fears, Fulham certainly won’t provide that.

Leeds United v Fulham match stats

Aleksandar Mitrovic’s penalty against Villa took his Premier League tally to eight goals, with only Erling Haaland (15) and Harry Kane (nine) netting more thus far. For this particular fixture, the prolific Serb has been directly involved in six goals in his last six league appearances against the Yorkshire club (four goals, two assists), including a brace on his last visit to Elland Road in September 2020.

Having been involved in a red card incident on Thursday night, in which Douglas Luiz was sent off for appearing to head-butt him, expect another fiery affair in West Yorkshire, such is the forward’s ability to ruffle feathers. Mitrovic has picked up the second-most yellow cards of any striker in the Premier League this season (three).

There is also set to be an industrious battle in the middle of the park. Fulham’s Joao Palhinha (44) and Leeds United’s Tyler Adams (41) are the only two players in the Premier League this season with over 40 tackles. The duo’s endeavour and tenacity should give this contest a real edge around the centre circle.
