Fans of Serie A are being treated to a fascinating title race this season and none of the top three teams appear to want to actually win the Scudetto. On Friday night both AC Milan and Inter Milan drew, giving Napoli the chance to go top of the table, level on points with league-leaders Milan but above on head-to-head (though that won’t officially come into play until they face each other again). However, Luciano Spalletti’s men had that opportunity last week and passed it up, drawing with Cagliari having seen Milan and Inter drop points against Salernitana and Sassuolo respectively.
Although Napoli are unbeaten in Serie A in seven games since a shock defeat to Spezia, the visitors aren’t in a great run of form across all competitions. Two consecutive draws in Serie A, against Inter and Cagliari have been joined by Napoli getting knocked out of the Europa League by Barcelona. After a 1-1 draw at the Nou Camp, Spalletti’s side lost 4-2 at home on Thursday – though that does mean they can put their full focus on the Serie A title race having also been knocked out of the Coppa Italia.
For Lazio, this game represents a chance for Maurizio Sarri to get one over his former employers while also keeping his current club’s Champions League hopes alive. Sarri took charge of 114 games for Napoli and won 79 in Serie A with a win percentage of 69% – more than any other manager in the club’s history.d
The hosts are just four points behind fourth-placed Juventus but things are so tight in the battle for the top four that any dropped points could see Lazio fall away. They do go into this game unbeaten in five in the league, winning three including a 3-0 win over Fiorentina who sit directly below them in the table.

Lazio vs Napoli: Match Stats
Dries Mertens loves playing Lazio it seems, and the Napoli man will be looking to further improve his record against the capital club. The Belgian has been directly involved in 13 goals in 14 league matches against Lazio, scoring six and providing a further seven assists, and he scored a brace in the previous fixture this season.
However, there may not be enough to separate these two sides. Lazio have only lost one of their last 25 league games, while Napoli have won 15 points from seven matches in 2022.
Napoli have been dominating this fixture of late with 11 wins from the past 15 matches against Lazio across all competitions. During that time, Lazio have managed just three wins and one draw. Luciano Spalletti’s side will be looking to build on their 4-0 thrashing of Lazio earlier this season.
