One-time world champions Japan got their 2023 Women’s World Cup campaign underway against Zambia on matchday one last week, and the 2011 winners were dominant in a one-sided affair, winning 5-0 against the tournament debutants. Costa Rica didn’t quite enjoy that same level of success in their curtain-raiser, capitulating 3-0 to one of the tournament favourites, Spain.
Futoshi Ikeda’s side were ruthless and dominant against the Copper Queens last week as Hinata Miyazawa, Mina Tanaka, Jun Endo and Riko Ueki provided the goals to give them an early lead in the infant Group C table. Should they come through this test against Costa Rica, and Spain win their match versus Zambia (as is expected), then matchday three could be a very tasty affair for first place between the two heavyweights.
Costa Rica, though, will be hoping to cause an upset and keep their Women’s World Cup dreams alive. The Central Americans were put to the sword by a Spain side who are hoping to win their first-ever World Cup, but they showed flashes of quality at times. Amelia Valverde now has a job on her hands to restore confidence in her side and have them fired up for this crunch clash.

Hinata Miyazawa’s brace against Zambia means she is currently the second-highest scorer in the Women’s World Cup. The Mynavi Sendai midfielder has six goals in just 24 international appearances for Japan and will be hoping to build on her tally against Costa Rica later this week. Also keep an eye out for Mina Tanaka, who was also on the scoresheet against Zambia. She is the highest scorer in Japan’s current squad with 25 goals and will be hungry for more.
