El Tri opened the 2023 Gold Cup with a 4-0 win over Honduras and had qualification to the knockout stages confirmed after their 3-1 victory against Haiti in the second game. It meant Mexico’s 1-0 defeat to Qatar in the final game was just a blot on their record, not changing anything for their path. Pit against Costa Rica in the quarter-finals, Mexico earned their semi-final spot with a 2-0 victory and they’ll be confident of going all the way.
Only three teams have won the Gold Cup (with Canada joining Mexico and USA) but nine nations have made it to the final, including Jamaica. Unfortunately, Jamaica co-hold the record for most final appearances without victory, losing both of their finals in 2015 and 2017. In 2015, it was a 3-1 defeat to Mexico, while two years later they were beaten 2-1 by USA.
Placed in a group alongside USA this year, Jamaica started their Gold Cup with a 1-1 draw against the reigning champions in Chicago. They then beat Trinidad and Tobago 4-1 in their second game before wrapping up the runners-up spot in Group A with a 5-0 win over Saint Kitts and Nevis. In the quarter-finals, Guatemala were dispatched 1-0, after they shocked everyone to finish above Canada in their group.

Jamaica vs Mexico match stats
Both Jamaica and Mexico relied on second-half showings to make it to the semi-finals of the Gold Cup. Both of Mexico’s two goals against Costa Rica came after half-time, as did Jamaica’s winner against Guatemala, and it was a similar story in the group stage. Exactly half of the 12 goals scored in Jamaica’s group stage matches (for and against) came in the second half, while Mexico’s games saw five of their nine goals netted after half-time.
Mexico dominate this fixture but based on performances at the 2023 Gold Cup, we may see a closer matchup, especially with the two draws in the Nations League. Jamaica have also scored in each of their past seven games across all competitions, including two against Mexico the last time these sides met.
