Inter Milan were just minutes away from sealing their passage into the last 16 of the Champions League with two matches to spare before Robert Lewandowski equalised for Barcelona just under two weeks ago, but the Italian side will be hoping to get the job done now. All Simone Inzaghi’s side need to do is win this week, to make things as uncomplicated as possible, putting them out of Barcelona’s reach. A draw would also be enough if Barcelona fail to win, though if football has taught us anything this season it’s to expect the unexpected.
Inter started the Champions League group in defeat to Bayern Munich, a 2-0 loss at home, but bounced back by beating Plzen in the reverse fixture. The Italian side really took control of their destiny in the double-header with Barcelona, winning 1-0 at home and then drawing 3-3 away – though as mentioned they could have won at the Nou Camp, taking the lead in the 89th minute.
Plzen, meanwhile, are out of the Champions League and must win to realistically keep their Europa League hopes alive. The Czech side are bottom of Group C, four points behind third-placed Barcelona and will be counting on the Blaugrana dropping points against Bayern this week.
It hasn’t been a fun campaign for Plzen, stuck in one of the toughest groups, and they are still awaiting their first point. Plzen opened Group C with a 5-1 thrashing at the hands of Barcelona before the aforementioned 2-0 defeat to Inter Milan. They then lost back-to-back matches against Bayern with a 5-0 defeat away followed up by a 4-2 loss at home, scoring two consolation goals in the second half.
