Inter Milan are still in control of the Serie A title race despite being third in the league, two points behind leaders Napoli, due to the fact they have a game in hand. However, their Scudetto defence isn’t going exactly as planned and Simone Inzaghi’s men are in poor form going into this weekend’s game. The Nerazzurri were sitting clear at the top of the table just a few weeks ago but have managed just one win from their past six Serie A matches.
That poor run has, in part, been due to their tough fixture list, taking on the likes of Atalanta, AC Milan and Napoli, but Inter will have expected to do better. The 2-1 defeat to bitter rivals AC Milan will have hurt most, but Inter will also be cursing the fact that they have now gone four games across all competitions without scoring – despite boasting Edin Dzeko and Lautaro Martinez amongst their attacking ranks.
It may be the perfect them, then, for them to play Salernitana and get their defence back on track. Salernitana are one of the worst teams in Serie A this season and currently sit bottom of the table. They have lost more games (16), scored fewer goals (20) and conceded more (56) than any other side in Serie A this season, and they’re only saved on having the worst points-per-game record by the fact that Genoa are struggling too, having played two more matches.
But there’s no denying that things are bad. Despite Salernitana winning three matches in Serie A this season, two of those victories came in October, a 1-0 win over Genoa and 2-1 triumph against Venezia – two results that briefly lifted them off the bottom of the table. Since that win over Venezia though, Salernitana have managed just one victory in 16 games across all competitions, losing 10 and go into this game on a run of four-straight draws.

Inter Milan may be struggling in front of goal but it’s not for a lack of trying. Since last scoring in their 1-1 draw with Napoli five games ago, Inter Milan have taken 69 shots without finding the net. In their past two goalless league matches, Inter Milan have had 29 and 21 shots respectively, while in their previous game against Salernitana than managed 23.
Simeone will be hoping for a repeat of the Salernitana result from December, but so will Lautaro Martinez. The Argentinian is Inter Milan’s top scorer in Serie A this season with 11 goals, but hasn’t found the net since beating Salernitana, when he scored a brace.

This will be just the sixth meeting between Inter Milan and Salernitana, with wins for each side alternating. Inter won the first game way back in February 1948 but lost the return fixture, with the two sides then having to endure a 50-year wait for the next meeting.
