Champions in 2016, Portugal are already looking in a good position to qualifying for the 2024 European Championships after a perfect start to their campaign. In 2021, Portugal’s defence ended at the quarter-final stage, losing 1-0 to Belgium, and they qualified having finished second in their group behind Ukraine. But this time around it looks as though top spot is the likely finish.

We are three games into Group J and Portugal currently sit top of the tree with three wins, scoring 13 goals without conceding. In the first batch of fixtures, Portugal beat Liechtenstein 4-0 and Luxembourg 6-0, really flexing their attacking muscles. Then, in the first round of the current international break, it was a 3-0 win this time over Bosnia and Herzegovina which has Portugal two points clear of second-placed Slovakia.

Euro 2016 was also a significant tournament for Iceland as they reached the quarter-finals, finishing second in their group ahead of Portugal and then beating England in the last 16. While Iceland followed that up with qualifying for the World Cup, there was no return to Euro 2020 as Iceland lost to Hungary in the play-offs — secured through their Nations League finish.

While there is the potential second chance of the Nations League, Iceland would need certain things to go their way to ensure at least a play-off spot, so automatic qualification is, of course, the goal. However, Iceland have lost two of their three group stage games so far, beaten by Bosnia and Herzegovina and Slovakia either side of a 7-0 thrashing of Liechtenstein.

Iceland vs Portugal match stats

If you take out Iceland’s 7-0 win over Liechtenstein, Iceland’s record in Group J so far has them scoring just one goal while conceding five against the bigger teams. At the same time, as mentioned, Portugal have scored 13 unanswered goals in qualifying so far, asserting their dominance in a group that did have potential to be a little tricky.

Portugal have a lot of wealth in their attack, with three players scoring at least two goals in qualifying so far. Bruno Fernandes has two, Cristiano Ronaldo has four, but Bernardo Silva has proven himself to be tough to stop. Fresh off the back of winning the Treble with Manchester City, Silva opened the scoring in Portugal’s 3-0 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina on Saturday, extending his run of netting in every Euro 2024 qualifying game so far.
