Holstein Kiel v Koln: Predictions

Second-tier side Holstein Kiel are just 90 minutes away from reaching the Bundesliga for the first time in the club’s history. They have previously played in Germany’s top flight, even winning the title in 1912, but they dropped down when the Bundesliga was formed in 1963. Kiel, who knocked Bayern Munich out of the 2020/21 DFB-Pokal, missed out on the chance of automatic promotion after losing their final game of the 2. Bundesliga season, allowing Greuther Furth to leapfrog them. But they have put themselves in a good position, bringing a 1-0 aggregate lead into the second leg.

So the onus is on Koln to come from behind and keep their own Bundesliga run going. Koln are three-time league champions but have not enough had any success since 1978, spending the time often switching between the Bundesliga and Germany’s second-tier. In the past 25 years, Koln have been relegated six times, having previously never dropped down, and they will be hoping to avoid a seventh. Koln secured their spot in the play-off on the final day of the regular season, beating Schalke to leapfrog Werder Bremen who lost to Borussia Monchengladbach. Unfortunately, Koln manager Friedrich Funkel doesn’t have a good record in the relegation play-off, previously losing in 2010/11 with Bochum (trying to gain promotion) and he has also tasted relegation previously with Koln in 2001/02.

Holstein Kiel v Koln: Match Stats

Although Simon Lorenz scored the goal in the first leg, Janni Serra remains Holstein Kiel’s danger man, and he will be looking to finish the season on a high. The German striker forward has scored 16 goals across all competitions, more than any other Kiel player, and goes into the final match of the campaign having netted six goals in his past nine league appearances.

History was not on Kiel’s side going into the play-offs, as only three 2. Bundesliga sides had earned promotion through the route since it was re-introduced in 2008/09. However, in the first leg they ended a long wait, being the first 2. Bundesliga side to win a relegation play-off match in nine years (17 games).
