United States are the defending champions of the competition — winning 2021’s edition — but Mexico are the most succesful nation in the competition’s history, and they will be desperate to consolidate that status, with The Stars and Stripes now just one trophy lift off matching their record eight titles.
Post-2000 it’s been a two-way battle for dominance in this biennial competition, with Mexico winning five titles and the United States claiming six. Haiti famously reached the semi-finals in 2019 — where Mexico knocked them out — their first appearance at that stage of the competition since finishing second in 1977, and winning the thing outright the tournament prior.

Lozano has a number of talented players upon whom he can call on, including Ajax duo Edson Alvarez and Jorge Sanchez. Among defensive midfielders and centre-backs (the two positions Alvarez occupies) in the Eredivisie last term, Alvarez ranked in the top five each for aerial duels won (97), possessions won in the defensive third (127), possessions won in the middle third (120) and completed passes into the opposition half (238).
Also keep an eye out for Feyenoord’s Santiago Gimenez, who bagged 15 goals in his maiden campaign in the Dutch top flight and 23 overall as Arne Slot’s men won the title and reached the Europa League quarter-finals. In fact, all 15 of Gimenez’s Eredivisie strikes were from open play, the second-most in the entire division in 2022/23, below only PSV’s Xavi Simons (17).
