Stephen Kenny’s Boys in Green suffered an opening-day defeat to France, though they battled valiantly. Ireland kept the World Cup finalists at bay for 50-odd minutes, before Bayern Munich defender Benjamin Pavard struck to separate the two nations. It was a tight contest, and Kenny will take encouragement from the performance.
Greece meanwhile comfortably saw off Gibraltar at the Estadio Algarve, winning 3-0 thanks to goals from Georgios Masouras, Manolis Siopis and Tasos Bakasetas. That has left Gus Poyet’s side second in the table, ahead of the Netherlands, and he will desperately want to consolidate a place the automatic places for the 2004 European champions.

Poyet will be turning to Vangelis Pavlidis for final-third inspiration. The 24-year-old has enjoyed a stellar campaign with AZ, where he notched 22 goals in all competitions. The Greek forward was sensational as the Dutch club reached the Europa Conference League final and will be hoping to carry that form into this latest international break.
There are a few interesting names in Kenny’s squad, including uncapped duo Liam Scales and Jack Taylor. The former enjoyed a breakthrough campaign on loan at Aberdeen from Celtic, while the latter was imperative to Peterborough United’s promotion push in League One. Josh Cullen may prove the most influential player though, having recently been named Burnley’s ‘Player of the Season’ and ‘Players’ Player of the Season’.
