Germany were outstanding in their 2023 Women’s World Cup opener. The two-time world champions ran out 6-0 winners over debutants Morocco with inspirational forward Alexandra Popp registering a brace. Interestingly, the German captain has now scored five Women’s World Cup goals, and every one of them has come against teams from Africa (Côte d’Ivoire in 2015, South Africa and Nigeria in 2019 and Morocco (2) in 2023). Klara Buhl and Lea Schuller also found themselves on the scoresheet. Unfortunately for the newcomers, Hanane Ait Al Haj and Yasmin Mrabet put the ball into their own net. “We’re super happy we were able to play like this in our opening match. It’s always difficult because you don’t really know where you stand or how your opponent will play. But we were able to impose our game,” Popp said afterwards.
Colombia also started positively. La Tricolor put in a strong opening performance against Korea Republic and their hard work was rewarded with a 2-0 success. Catalina Usme broke the deadlock before Linda Caicedo became the first teenager to score at this summer’s tournament. It proved to be to Colombia’s second-ever Women’s World Cup win. “For me, it’s always been about playing for my country and my national team, so I’m happy to score the goal. Now it’s time to think about recovering. We’re going to face a team that’s coming from a rout, but this is a World Cup. We’re getting ready for that. So welcome, Germany,” Caicedo told reporters after the game.
