While the rest of Europe are contesting qualification for Euro 2024, Germany have to fill their time with friendlies, already guaranteed a spot at next year’s tournament as hosts. After taking on Peru at the weekend, Germany will then pit themselves against Belgium, perhaps the bigger test of where they stand after the World Cup.

The World Cup was another disappointing showing for Germany as they bowed out at the group stage for the second tournament running, a far cry from the team that won in 2014. There was just one win for Hansi Flick’s side in Qatar, beating Costa Rica in their final group game, but they finishing third behind Spain on goal difference. Germany decided to stick with Flick for the road to Euro 2024, but you have to feel there will still be a lot of scrutiny.

Peru missed out on the World Cup, losing in the AFC-CONMEBOL play-off final against Australia on penalties. It’s always tough for South American nations to qualify for the World Cup, placed in one round robin format of 10 teams, with only the top four making it through automatically. Peru finished fifth, just two points behind Ecuador, and ultimately paid the price.

Following the failure, Ricardo Gareca resigned as he couldn’t come to an agreement with the federation on a bigger role in the development of football, bringing an end to his seven-year stint. Gareca has been replaced by Juan Reynoso, who has won three and lost one of his four games so far.

His form earned the striker a first ever call up for the German national team, and Fullkrug has scored three goals in four games so far, netting two at the World Cup.
