The 2023/24 will be a big one for Newcastle as they mark their return to the Champions League, knowing they will have to try to juggle European football and the Premier League if they wish to cement themselves as regulars at the top table. But before the campaign gets underway, preparation needs to be done and Newcastle will soon be off to the United States for their pre-season tour which will see them face Aston Villa, Chelsea and Brighton.

Before that there is also a friendly against Ranger at Ibrox, but Newcastle kick off pre-season against non-league side Gateshead. The first game of pre-season, you can bank on there being a whole host of players on display for the Magpies as Eddie Howe tries to get a look at his full squad while managing fitness. Pre-season is a marathon, not a sprint.

There will also be some players who are yet to return from their holidays having had a delayed end to the 2022/23 campaign due to international duty, so it won’t be a full squad for Newcastle. Nevertheless, this is still expected to be a good game, selling out within hours when tickets were made available to buy last month.

Gateshead are in the fifth tier of English football and finished the 2022/23 campaign 14th in the National League, 11 points clear of relegation and 12 behind the play-off spots, slap bang in the middle — even with their point deduction. The club also reached the final of the FA Trophy last season but missed out on the chance for silverware, losing 1-0 to Halifax in the final at Wembley.

Gateshead vs Newcastle match stats

As it’s the first game of pre-season, Newcastle will probably field two separate XIs, one in the first half and a completely different one in the second; at this stage, fitness is a lot more important than results. However, given the gulf in quality between these two clubs — Premier League vs non-league — even a rotated Newcastle team should look comfortable against Gateshead.

The Magpies scored 68 goals in the Premier League last season with just 33 conceded, the latter a joint-best in the division alongside champions Manchester City. Gateshead, meanwhile, conceded 62 goals in their 46 games in the National League but did score 67.
