West Brom vs Fulham: Predictions

When Sam Allardyce was appointed as West Brom manager in December, replacing Slaven Bilic, his sole aim was to keep the Baggies in the Premier League, having built a reputation as a relegation-fighting specialist. However, he has so far struggled to inspire his new players and they remain in the relegation zone, quite far from safety.

Although defeat to Man City in midweek was to be expected, it was the fifth loss in the Premier League since Allardyce took charge, and sixth across all competitions including their FA Cup third-round exit to Blackpool. Worryingly for West Brom, it was also another heavy home loss, with the Baggies now conceding 17 goals in their past four matches at the Hawthorns and keeps them seven points away from 17th-placed Brighton.

One place and two points above West Brom are their opponents this weekend, Fulham, who missed the opportunity to close the gap on Brighton after drawing with the Seagulls in midweek. Like West Brom, Fulham have managed just two wins in the Premier League so far this season and are in the thick of the relegation fight, five points from safety (albeit with a game in hand).

But unlike West Brom, their most recent Premier League win wasn’t just a few games ago. Since beating Leicester City at the end of November, the Cottagers have gone nine games without a win in the Premier League, with their only win across all competitions in that run coming against Queens Park Rangers in the FA Cup after extra-time.

Although Fulham haven’t won in their past nine Premier League games, they have still been picking up the points, drawing six times in that run – compared to just one stalemate in their opening 10 matches. Allardyce is also awaiting his first win at the Hawthorns since taking charge, with all four of his points won coming away from home.

One of Allardyce’s biggest problems has been West Brom’s home defence, but they face a Fulham side who, like them, have been poor in front of goal. Both teams have scored just 15 goals in the Premier League this season, with only Burnley (13) and Sheffield United (12) scoring fewer.

Fulham’s victory over West Brom earlier this season ended a four-game winless run in this fixture following four draws, but they have enjoyed a bit of dominance over the past 10 years. The Baggies have not beat Fulham in 10 games now, spread over 10 years, since a 2-1 Premier League win at the Hawthorns in October 2010 when Youssef Mulumbu and Marc Antoine Fortune cancelled out a Scott Carson own goal.
