Fulham are looking to return to the Premier League at the first time of asking and, as things stand, they are on course to do that. The Cottagers are two points clear at the top of the table going into the final gameweek before Christmas but they will not be happy with that. Fulham will feel they should be even further clear having drawn their past four matches, including a stalemate against bottom-of-the-league Derby County. But, for a positive, Fulham are still unbeaten in 11 games in the Championship since losing 4-1 to Coventry at the start of October, and they have faced four of the other five teams in the top six during that run.
Sheffield Utd will also have hoped for an immediate return to the top flight, and although they sit in the bottom half of the Championship table, it is still a possibility. The Blades are down in 13th, currently six points behind Stoke City in the final play-off spot but that gap has shortened in recent weeks. Sheffield Utd have won their past three Championship games including two under Paul Heckingbottom, following the sacking of Slavisa Jokanovic. That run has took them from 17th to 10th and they have only dropped down to 13th due to playing one game fewer than those around them. It would be unwise to count them out, but they need a big result this weekend.

Aleksandar Mitrovic returned to scoring ways last weekend, ending a two-game drought in Fulham’s 1-1 draw with Luton. By his high standards in the Championship, a two-game drought is equal to an eternity, and he has only failed to score in six league matches this season. Overall, the Serb has managed 22 goals in 21 league games and looks on course to break the record, likely to add another strike on Monday.
But you have to look at the form these two sides are in, and it’s hard to see Fulham ending their drawing streak. They have struggled against two mid-table teams in recent weeks and against basement club Derby, while Sheffield Utd are on the up. Both sides have also scored in each of their past three league matches.
