France booked their place in the quarter-finals as Group D winners, becoming just one of two sides to win all three of their group stage matches alongside England.
A hard fought 2-1 victory over rivals Italy in their first game was followed up with a 1-0 win over Norway and a 4-1 demolition of fellow qualifiers Switzerland to reach the knockout stages for the second consecutive tournament. Having failed to qualify for the U21 European Championships between 2007 and 2017, Sylvain Ripoll’s men are now looking to make it back-to-back semi-final appearances, as their talented youngsters aim to repeat the feat of 1988 and win the tournament once more.
Opponents Ukraine however, will be no pushovers as they only missed out on topping Group B on goal difference. Final day opponents Spain twice came from behind and equalised in the 90th minute to secure a 2-2 draw and top spot to push Ukraine down to second.
Ruslan Rotan’s side have impressed so far during the tournament, winning back-to-back matches without conceding against Croatia and Romania, before the aforementioned 2-2 draw against Spain saw them reach the knockout rounds for just the second time (with a 2nd place finish back in 2006 being the other).
