The Women’s World Cup is now entering the quarter final stages and despite struggling in three of their four matches so far, England are now the favourites to win the tournament with most of the bookmakers – with just one of the remaining eight teams having ever won the World Cup before.

It’s been a real tournament of shocks with Germany and Brazil among the teams dumped out in the group stages and that theme carried on into the Quarter Finals as Sweden overcame the odds to beat USA on penalties – the four-time World Cup winners and pre-tournament favourites heading home before the final eight stage.

Blagult will take on the only remaining team to have previously won the tournament in the Quarter Finals when they face Japan, Nadeshiko progressing thanks to a 3-1 win over Norway in which Hinata Miyazawa notched her fifth goal of the tournament.

England were almost on the end of a shock result themselves as they struggled to a penalty shoot-out against Nigeria with Lauren James being sent off during normal time. The Lionesses were eventually able to progress and will now meet Colombia in the Quarter Finals as Catalina Usme’s 51st minute strike put the South American side through ahead of Jamaica.

Elsewhere, there’s set to be an all-European affair in Wellington, as the Netherlands overcame South Africa 2-0 to set-up a meeting with Spain, who produced a stunning performance to hammer Switzerland 5-1 in their own Round of 16 game

And the Quarter Final schedule is completed by hosts Australia taking on France in Brisbane, with both of those teams progressing from their own Round of 16 clashes without conceding a goal, les Bleues beating Morocco 4-0 and the Matildas progressing with a 2-0 victory over another European outfit in the shape of Denmark.

Women’s World Cup predictions

Today’s Women’s World Cup 2023 tips

Our betting previews include our tips, of course, but they also include the odds from a host of different bookmakers, our key stats ahead of the fixture, the predictions of our expert writers and a look back at previous meetings between the two nations.

Women’s World Cup 2023 in-play betting tips

In-play betting has become more and more popular by the year and when the Women’s World Cup 2023 gets underway, a lot of punters will be watching each and every game live as it unfolds, giving ample opportunity for some in-play betting.

That means you’ll be able to place bets based on how the final is flowing before your eyes, whether you fancy a defender to nick an unlikely goal or the star forward is looking dangerous and you want to back her to strike next. We’re looking at you Sam Kerr and Rachel Daly.

And what’s more, with most bookmakers also offering cash out on bets, you can react to the action to cash out for a portion of your potential winnings before the game is over.

Full-time results

The most popular market on any sportsbook, a full-time result bet is as simple as it sounds – you’re betting on the eventual outcome of the game.

The beauty of the Women’s World Cup sees some of the greatest players and teams in the international game go head-to-head and whichever way you see the game heading, you can bet on the outcome with the full-time results market.

You can even bet on which team will win each half or be leading at a certain point. There are also correct score markets, where you can bet on the exact result at full-time, or indeed half-time.

To score and win tips

You might get more value on those short-price odds for the favourites by combining your team to win tip with a goalscorer tip!

Of course, there are plenty of goalscoring markets available regardless, including first scorer, any time scorer, last scorer, to score two or more and many others.

Both teams to score

Exactly what it says on the tin – both teams must score in the 90 minutes for your bet to come in.

These are particularly popular bets to place as multiples, when you’re betting on for example four games and essentially eight different teams to score. Easy pickings with some of the attacking talent set to be on show!

Over 2.5 goals

Similar to the BTTS market, in these markets you’re betting on more than two goals to be scored in the game, which can be particularly popular if you’re expecting a thumping win for one side – or if you’re backing both teams to be on the scoresheet a lot.

Of course, you can also bet on Under 2.5 goals if you’re expecting a lower-scoring game, or you can change the parameters to bet on Under or Over 1.5, 3.5 or 4.5 goals and more. The 2019 Women’s World Cup averaged 2.81 goals per match, including a 13-0 thrashing of Thailand by the USWNT.

Double chance

Think the bookies have got the odds all wrong and fancy those underdogs to get the better of their more illustrious opponents?

The double chance bet is perfect for this kind of hunch, as it allows you simply to bet on a team not to lose, giving you both the victory on your chosen team and the draw within the odds.

Bookings

It is often said that officiating in women’s football still has to catch up with regards to harsh decisions, with many fans feeling fouls are often waved away wrongly when they would have been given in the men’s game. This has led to bad injuries, as players look to get as close to the line as possible, knowing they are less likely to be punished.

Nevertheless, there were still 130 yellow cards shown across the 52 matches 2019 Women’s World Cup, with 116 for either a reckless tackle or stopping a promising attack opportunity.

There are plenty of markets available here, from total bookings, overs and under markets and which team will pick up the first booking in a game. Plus, you can even bet on whether a specific match will feature a red card.

There are also markets available on specific players to be carded or even sent off in a game.

Corners taken

Most bookmakers now offer bet-builder style markets where you can combine different bets from corners, cards, goals and result markets to create a specific, bespoke bet on the game.

But corner markets are worth backing themselves and you can bet on a certain amount of corners in the game, overs and unders markets, team specific amounts and who will win the first corner among other bets.

Women’s World Cup 2023 VAR specials

The 2019 Women’s World Cup was used as a trial for the updated Laws of the Game which included more scrutiny for goalkeeper encroachment during penalties. There was also VAR at the tournament, and it will return for Australia/New Zealand, hopefully with better use.

Some bookmakers do offer VAR specials — will there be a check in the game, how many will there be, that type of thing — so keep an eye out for any that get involved at the Women’s World Cup.

At the moment, the USWNT are favourites and understandably so given their standing in women’s football. However, European champions England are also high up the list after their successes last year. Spain and Germany will count themselves in the running, with France having an outside chance — now led by former Saudi Arabia (men’s) manager Herve Renard.
