Real Madrid vs Atalanta prediction: First piece of European silverware up for grabs

The first piece of European silverware is on the line when Champions League winners Real Madrid take on Europa League holders Atalanta.

Real Madrid vs Atalanta latest prediction

Real Madrid 2-1 Atalanta (15/2 with Bet365)

The UEFA Cup/Europa League winners have won eight of the 24 finals since the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup was discontinued in 1999. However, since Zenit in 2008, the only non-European champion clubs to have managed it are Atlético de Madrid, in 2010, 2012, and 2018.

Furthermore, Madrid have won 16 of their last 17 games against Italian clubs.

Over 2.5 goals (16/25 with BetMGM)

Heading into the new season, Real Madrid’s last two summer games have each seen at least three goals scored, while Atalanta has been averaging 4.5 goals per game.

Kylian Mbappé to score anytime (21/20 with Bet365)

All eyes will be on Kylian Mbappé who should debut here for Real Madrid following the Frenchman’s high-profile switch from Paris Saint-Germain this summer. It will be Mbappé’s first non-Champions League appearance in UEFA’s club football hierarchy. He comes into this fixture having scored 48 goals in his 73 previous international club matches.

Real Madrid and Atalanta meet at 8pm (UK time) on Wednesday 14th August at Kazimierz Górski National Stadium in Warsaw, Poland.

Already the most successful club in UEFA Champions League history, Real Madrid will now look to claim a record sixth UEFA Super Cup when they take on an Atalanta side bidding to clinch a second European trophy less than three months after their first.

Real Madrid lifted the European Cup for the 15th time in the 2023/24 season – more than twice as many victories as the next most successful club, AC Milan, with seven titles. They now face an Atalanta side that triumphed in the UEFA Europa League in May, securing their first major silverware in over 60 years.

This is Madrid’s ninth appearance in the Super Cup (W5, L3). Having lost their first two finals, they won the next four but were beaten by their neighbours Atlético de Madrid in 2018 before defeating Eintracht Frankfurt in their most recent appearance in 2022.

This is Atalanta’s first appearance in the Super Cup. They are the 41st club to feature and the fourth successive debutant after Villarreal in 2021 and Eintracht Frankfurt (2022)—who both lost—and 2023 winners Manchester City.

Atalanta are the seventh Italian club to feature in the Super Cup, after AC Milan (1973, 1989, 1990, 1993, 1994, 2003, 2007), Juventus (1984, 1996), Sampdoria (1990), Parma (1993), Lazio (1999), and Inter Milan (2010).

The team from Bergamo would become the fifth Italian side to win the Super Cup and the first since the most recent of Milan’s five triumphs, in 2007.

Real Madrid team news

Carlo Ancelotti’s squad has been bolstered by the additions of attackers Endrick and Kylian Mbappé this summer.

Both are in contention to feature against Atalanta, having returned from their respective summer breaks in excellent physical condition.

In the case of Mbappé, though, it is becoming increasingly likely that he will start. However, it can’t be said the same for compatriot Eduardo Camavinga, who sustained a knee injury during the final training session after colliding with Aurélien Tchouaméni.

Jude Bellingham, Dani Carvajal, Fede Valverde, Tchouameni and Ferland Mendy should all be there from kick-off with Vinicius Junior and Rodrygo, leaving Arda Guler on the bench.

Atalanta team news

Gian Piero Gasperini expressed his disappointment in Atalanta’s approach to the summer transfer window, stating that his team is “much less competitive” than it was at the end of last season, just days before their UEFA Super Cup clash against Real Madrid.

The Atalanta coach revealed that star playmaker Teun Koopmeiners has decided to join Juventus and is no longer training with the first team.

Furthermore, Atalanta has suffered setbacks with Italy internationals Gianluca Scamacca and Giorgio Scalvini both sustaining anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries, which will keep them sidelined for a significant portion of the 2024–25 season.

On a positive note, the club has added Ben Godfrey this summer, as well as Nicolò Zaniolo on loan from Galatasaray, Ibrahim Soulemana from Cagliari, and the permanent acquisition of Charles De Ketelaere following his loan spell last season.

Real Madrid vs Atalanta head-to-head

The sides’ only previous fixtures occurred four seasons ago in the first knockout round of the Champions League. Madrid triumphed 4–1 on aggregate against an Atalanta side coached, as now, by Gian Piero Gasperini.
