Wolves vs Burnley EFL Cup prediction and stats: Will the Clarets cause an upset?

Wolves welcome Championship side Burnley to Molineux for an EFL Cup second round clash.

Gary O’Neil’s side have a chance to put their 6-2 defeat to Chelsea behind them when they face one of the Championship favourites in Burnley on Wednesday. But will they secure a spot in the next round or will the Clarets heap more misery on them?

Three Wolves vs Burnley predictions

Wolves 1-0 Burnley (7/1 with Bet365)

Wolves were unbeaten in the Premier League against Burnley last season, winning the previous game at Molineux by a 1-0 scoreline.

Jørgen Strand Larsen to score anytime (13/8 with Paddy Power)

The Norwegian scored his first goal for Wolves last time out against Chelsea and will be hoping to make it goals in back-to-back games for his new side.

Under 2.5 Goals (23/20 with BetMGM)

Matches between these two sides are usually low-scoring affairs. There have been just four goals scored in the last four meetings, with under 2.5 goals landing each time.

How to watch Wolves vs Burnley live

Wolves vs Burnley is scheduled for 7:30pm on Wednesday 28th August and will be broadcast live in the UK on Sky Sports+.

How both teams go into Wolves vs Burnley

Gary O’Neil will be hoping he can kick-start Wolves’ season with a victory against Burnley in the EFL Cup.

He has seen his side start the 2024/25 campaign with back-to-back defeats against Arsenal and Chelsea despite not playing all that badly. That sounds insane when you look at the 6-2 scoreline in the Chelsea match, but Wolves actually recorded a higher xG than the London side (1.96-1.68) with defensive mistakes and poor finishing letting them down.

The EFL Cup hasn’t been a favourable tournament for Wolves, reaching the quarter-final stage just once in the previous 24 years. But they will be hoping that it will be different this time around. They face a Burnley side that started well on their return to the Championship with impressive wins against Luton and Cardiff, but now find themselves a lot worse off.

With a lot of players departing and a 1-0 defeat to Sunderland, the mood around Turf Moor has changed. Scott Parker has already complained that this game will “stretch” his side with his now limited squad.

Wolves host Burnley at Molineux on Wednesday 28th August at 7:30pm (UK time).

Wolves team news

Sasa Kalajdzic is out for the long term and is Wolves’ only confirmed absentee for the visit of Burnley.

Jose Sa should be rested so Dan Bentley will start between the sticks and he should be joined in the starting XI by the likes of Daniel Podence, Craig Dawson, Tommy Doyle and Pablo Sarabia.

Burnley team news

Scott Parker’s numbers have dwindled in recent weeks through injury and players leaving the club for pastures new. Mike Tresor, Nathan Redmond, Jordan Beyer, Aaron Ramsey and Hjalmar Ekdal have all been ruled out, while Dara O’Shea has joined Sander Berge, Wilson Odobert and Arijanet Muric in returning to the Premier League.

Wolves vs Burnley head-to-head

Gary O’Neil’s side went unbeaten against Burnley last season, winning 1-0 at home before securing a 1-1 draw at Turf Moor. The Clarets were unbeaten in the four previous matches before last season.
