How both teams go into Wolfsburg vs Bayern Munich
For the first time 2012/13, Bayern Munich aren’t the defending champions going into a new Bundesliga season. Bayer Leverkusen ended their 11-year stranglehold on Germany’s top flight, and it’s been all change at Bayern Munich. Thomas Tuchel has been replaced by Vincent Kompany, who moves to Germany after getting relegated from the Premier League with Burnley.
Competitive football did already get underway for Kompany and Bayern as they beat Ulm 4-0 in the first round of the DFB-Pokal. But this will be a new test for Kompany as he looks to set Bayern on their way to the title. Kompany is Bayern’s 27th different coach in the Bundesliga, including interims, with the last 15 all avoiding defeat in their debut match.
Wolfsburg, meanwhile, enter the campaign off the back of a very underwhelming 2023/24. The Wolves finished 12th in the Bundesliga, just four points clear of the relegation play-off spots. They were closer to the relegation play-offs than they were to the Europa Conference League qualifying play-offs.
Only two teams lost more games in the Bundesliga last season than Wolfsburg’s 17, with one of those being bottom-of-the-table Darmstadt. But things did look slightly better under Ralph Hasenhuttl. Wolfsburg won the games that mattered at the key time and have started this season with a win over TuS Koblenz in the DFB-Pokal.

Bayern Munich finally got their man in Joao Palhinha this summer, also signing Michael Olise and Hiroki Ito among others. They’ve also said goodbye to Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui.
Ito is currently injured, while Palhinha and Olise made substitute appearances in the cup. Harry Kane was also a substitute but should start here, ahead of Thomas Muller.
