Liverpool look to bounce back

Liverpool’s title hopes took a huge hit on Wednesday as Jürgen Klopp lost his first ever away game against Everton in his final Merseyside derby in charge of the Reds.

“I can only apologise for today to the people. It is very disappointing. We played the game Everton wanted and they scored two goals from set-pieces. We should have done better but we didn’t,” Klopp after the match at Goodison Park. “No good thoughts at all. Very disappointed and frustrated. It was not good enough.

“It was not the most inspired performance of all time, I really feel for the people. We never lost here (it was Everton’s first Goodison derby win in almost 14 years) and it feels really different. I really apologise for that.

“I can’t say now that we are still fully in it; we need a crisis at Man City and Arsenal and need to win football games because if they start losing all their games and we do what we did tonight nothing changes. We are not safe in the Champions League as well so we should just play better football.”

It’s been a terrible time for the Red side of Merseyside recently, as their dreams of a possible quadruple at the start of 2024 have imploded. First came a 4-3 extra-time defeat to Manchester United in the FA Cup in the middle of March, before Italian side Atalanta knocked them out of the Europa League. Now, sitting three point off leaders Arsenal with three games to play, they may have to make do with just the League Cup in Jürgen Klopp’s final season.

Their quest for a second Premier League title isn’t quite over, but it would take the footballing gods to put a lot of things in their favour if they were going to pull it off. This weekend’s game against West Ham, however, gives them the chance to put things right, having won each of the previous five meetings between the two sides, having already beaten them 3-1 in the Premier League and 5-1 in the League Cup so far this season.

Under Jürgen Klopp, the Reds have only won more Premier League games against Crystal Palace (13) than they have against West Ham (12), while the Hammers are also struggling for form at home, having won just one of their last eight Premier League home games (D5 L2). David Moyes’ side will be hopeful of at least scoring however, with Liverpool failing to keep a clean sheet in their last seven.

If the Hammers are going to find the back of the net, then their mostly likely scorer will either be Michail Antonio, who is looking to score in three consecutive games for the first time since August 2021, or Jarrod Bowen, who has scored in both of West Ham’s meetings with Liverpool so far this season.
