West Ham vs Crystal Palace prediction, stats, tips and team news

West Ham and Crystal Palace meet in a Premier League London derby on Saturday, 18th January, at 3pm (UK time). Graham Potter managed three points in his first league game on Tuesday and is looking to become just the third manager to win both of his first two Premier League games in charge of West Ham, after Trevor Brooking in May 2003 and Gianfranco Zola in September 2008.

Will Hughes to be Carded (3/1 with Bet365)

No player has been shown more yellow cards this season for Crystal Palace than Will Hughes. The midfielder should be handed a start on Saturday with Jefferson Lerma being substituted after 20 minutes against Leicester midweek due to illness.

In total, Hughes has been shown seven yellow cards in 18 league appearances this season, with an average of 0.54 cards per 90 minutes. He is also making more fouls than any other player at the club, with 2.8 per 90 committed since the start of the campaign. At 3/1, he looks a solid proposition against a West Ham side with tricky players such as Lucas Paqueta and Mohammed Kudus.

Lucas Paqueta to Score from Outside the Box (33/1 with Bet365)

I’ll also be having a few quid on Paqueta to score from outside the box. I’m expecting West Ham’s attacking output to increase under Graham Potter and the mood around the club should be much improved after their 3-2 win over Fulham on Wednesday.

Four of Paqueta’s last nine league goals for the Hammers have been from outside the area. The Brazilian has scored in his last two outings, and with other bookmakers such as Unibet pricing this same selection at just 9/1, I’m happy to take the 33/1 on offer with bet365.

How both teams go into West Ham vs Crystal Palace

Just when West Ham looked to be turning a corner under Julen Lopetegui, they found themselves on the end of 5-0 and 4-1 thrashings against Liverpool and Man City, respectively. After his departure, the club appointed Graham Potter, and he marked his Premier League debut with a 3-2 win over Fulham on Tuesday night. With 17 matches remaining this season, West Ham sit 13th in the table, 10 points above the relegation zone and nine points behind sixth.

Palace, meanwhile, have bounced back from their consecutive defeats to Arsenal by going five games unbeaten. The Eagles have managed wins over Southampton and Leicester in the league, along with a 1-0 victory over Stockport County in the FA Cup. Palace have won three of their last four Premier League away games, as many as they had in their previous 21. Indeed, the Eagles are unbeaten in six on the road (W3 D3) – they’ve never gone seven without defeat in the top flight.

West Ham team news

Jarrod Bowen will be a huge loss for West Ham, sidelined until early March with a foot injury. Michail Antonio is also out until May, while there is no return date for Niclas Fullkrug after he picked up a thigh issue. Crysencio Summerville will be assessed before kick-off.

Crystal Palace team news

Adam Wharton is making progress but is not expected back until February. Jefferson Lerma will miss out due to illness and Ismaila Sarr is suffering with a tight hamstring. The latter will be assessed on Friday.

West Ham vs Crystal Palace head-to-head

West Ham beat Palace 2-0 earlier this season, but endured a four-game winless run in this fixture prior to that and have been very poor at home against the Eagles in recent times.
