West Ham trying to turn form around

Not too long ago, West Ham beat Manchester United and Arsenal back-to-back without conceding a goal. Those fixtures came as part of a three-game winning streak with three clean sheets, also shutting out Wolves in a 3-0 victory. The clean sheet streak continued in a goalless draw with Brighton, but it turns out that was the start of a poor run for the Hammers.

West Ham are now winless in their past six league games, yet to taste victory in 2024. After the stalemate against Brighton, there were also draws with Sheffield United and Bournemouth, starting West Ham’s fall down the table. And then both Man Utd and Arsenal got their revenge, with West Ham conceding nine goals across those two matches without finding the net themselves. And that trend continued with a 2-0 defeat away at Nottingham Forest. It leaves the Hammers ninth, now 11 points outside the top five, and eight behind sixth-placed Man Utd. To make things worse, West Ham have also exited the FA Cup during that run, losing 1-0 away at Championship side Bristol City following a 1-1 draw at home.

Brentford, meanwhile, went on a poor run of form following the injury to Bryan Mbeumo, as the Cameroon forward had carried the Bees in Ivan Toney’s absence. Since Mbeumo has been injured, Brentford have lost seven of their nine Premier League games, only managing to beat Nottingham Forest and Wolves. Those two matches have coincided with Toney returning to the team.

Toney made his return in the 3-2 win over Nottingham Forest and scored in the game, which ended Brentford’s five-game losing streak. Although Brentford lost their next two games, they were against Tottenham and Manchester City, which can be understandable. After scoring against Tottenham, Toney also found the net in the 2-0 win over Wolves, putting Brentford six points clear of the relegation zone at the time. Toney has even scored against Liverpool since, but Brentford lost 4-1 in that game before another defeat to City, though it took until the 71st minute for Erling Haaland to make the breakthrough. The Bees’ cushion on the bottom three has been reduced to five points.

West Ham vs Brentford match tip

Brentford to win and BTTS @ 21/5 by Midnite

While the odds point in West Ham’s favour, history is on Brentford’s side. These two sides have met five times in the top flight since Brentford were promoted to the Premier League in 2021, and the Bees have won all of them. As an aggregate score, Brentford lead 11-3, including 2-1 and 2-0 victories at the London Stadium. However, the Bees have been rocky defensively this season and have conceded in eight of their last nine Premier League games.

West Ham are slight favourites for this game, which can be understandable given Brentford’s inconsistent form. The Bees have lost eight of their 12 away games in the Premier League this season, enduring a run of five defeats in a row between November and January. That includes two London derbies, with Brentford being beaten by Crystal Palace and Tottenham. However, West Ham are now winless in their last three Premier League home games, including that 6-0 thrashing at the hands of Arsenal — explaining the close nature of the odds.
