A fresh boost in the hunt for European football

West Ham’s Europa League win over Freiburg could have just handed their weekend opponents a massive boost. This season, the top two nations in European performance will get an extra Champions League spot for the new campaign. England is currently third on that list, trailing Italy and Germany, but West Ham knocking Freiburg out of the Europa League has put the Premier League in charge.

Funnily enough, Aston Villa could be the one to benefit the most, West Ham’s immediate opponents after their big win. The Villans are currently fourth but have lost some grip on the top four, particularly after their 4-0 defeat to Tottenham last weekend. It left Aston Villa just two points from fifth-placed Tottenham, who have a game in hand. Of course, points on the board are better than games in hand, but Aston Villa have less control than they would have liked.

The defeat to Tottenham was Aston Villa’s second in their past five games. They also lost 2-1 to Manchester United, key defeats in the fight for Champions League football. It was also a bit of a wobble at Villa Park, where Villa had previously looked unbeatable. Things are a bit better on the road of late, with Villa unbeaten in their past four games, including three consecutive wins ahead of their trip to London.

West Ham, meanwhile, have re-found their form after a tough run. The Hammers went six games without victory to start 2024, drawing their first three matches of the year before losing three in a row without scoring. It was a run that saw West Ham fall down the table, but they have steadied themselves slightly. The rot was stopped with a 4-2 win over Brentford before West Ham beat Everton 3-1. Last weekend it was a 2-2 draw with Burnley, keeping West Ham in seventh.

They are not in a European football spot at the moment, but West Ham’s run in the Europa League could make that change. If the Premier League gets five teams in the Champions League, each European qualification spot would drop. So sixth would get the Europa League group stage place, and seventh, currently, the Europa Conference League play-off round handed down with EFL Cup winners Liverpool all-but secured European football through their league finish. And if Man City, Man Utd or Liverpool win the FA Cup, that Europa League spot would be thrown into the mix for league position, meaning seventh would secure a place.

Both teams were in action on Thursday, so some tiredness may be going into this game. But Aston Villa have been fast starters in the Premier League this season. Arsenal (31) has scored more first-half goals in the Premier League this season than Aston Villa’s 29. At the same time, only Manchester City (14) has been ahead at the break more often than Villa (13).

The fact that both sides played in the Europa League on Thursday will play a part in the odds, though both were at home. Bookies find it hard to separate the two sides, with some even offering the same odds for a home and away win. It’s understandable, too, given the form of both West Ham and Aston Villa, home and away, respectively.
