One last spot at Euro 2024

Here we go, after a year of qualifying, we’re finally about to know the full makeup of Euro 2024. There are just three slots left, with Wales and Poland playing for one of them. The winner of this match will be thrown into arguably the toughest group at Euro 2024, placed alongside France, Netherlands and Austria.

Wales missed out on automatic qualification for Euro 2024 having finished third in their group behind Turkey and Croatia. It was a relatively underwhelming campaign with just three wins, two against Latvia and one against Croatia. But, it’s worth noting that they only lost twice, beaten by Armenia and Turkey. Wales qualified for the play-offs thanks to the fact that the majority of UEFA Nations League A teams automatically qualified for Euro 2024. Despite finishing bottom of their group and suffering relegation, Wales were one of two League A teams to get the second chance through the play-offs.

The other team was Poland, who were the highest-placed Nations League A side to not automatically qualify, needing this second chance. Nobody expected Poland to need this route. They were placed in a qualifying group alongside Albania, Czech Republic, Moldova and Faroe Islands, and finished third. They were four points behind the top two, Albania and Czech Republic, with two of their three wins coming against Faroe Islands.

Both sides had comfortable wins in the play-off semi-finals, with Wales beating Finland 4-1 and Poland thrashing Estonia 5-1.

Wales vs Poland match tip

Robert Lewandowski to score anytime @ 13/8 by Betfred

Poland scored five goals against Estonia in their play-off semi-final, but Robert Lewandowski didn’t get any of them. However, Wales are still wary of the Barcelona striker.

“Everyone knows how dangerous he is,” said Harry Wilson said.

“His hunger to score goals is the biggest thing about him and he’s scored everywhere he’s been in his career. He might not be getting younger, but if we give him half a sniff at goal he’s going to take it.

“We need to make sure we stop him and don’t give him space or chances. If we do that we’re confident with the quality in our dressing room going the other way that we can really hurt them.”

Lewandowski is Poland’s all-time top scorer and most-capped player, with 82 goals in 147 games.

Wales are slight odds-on favourites to qualify for Euro 2024, but things are a lot closer when it comes to winning inside 90 minutes. They are still favourites, which will have been influenced by their unbeaten run, and the fact that they are the home side. However, Poland’s record against Wales shouldn’t be ignored.

Wales vs Poland team news

Joe Low, Ben Cabango and Wes Burns all had to pull out of the Wales squad before their win over Finland. But the Dragons came through that game unscathed.
