USA Women vs Germany Women latest prediction
Group B of the Olympics always looked to be a fascinating one of paper, with United States, Germany, Australia and Zambia drawn together. Any of the four teams had the capability of going through, though the odds were slightly stacked against Zambia who are suffering off the pitch.
Going into this game, USA and Germany are level on points, goals scored and goal difference. So, even though there will be one match left, this could decide the group. United States were comprehensive in their victory over Zambia, with Emma Hayes’ side over 3-0 up inside the opening half hour. Trinity Rodman opened the scoring with Mallory Swanson bagging two goals in quick succession to put USA in cruise control.
It continued USA’s unbeaten start under Emma Hayes to five games, with four victories. They are yet to concede a goal in this new era, with Hayes focussing on making USA tight at the back.
But up next is a Germany side not shy in front of goal. DFB-Frauen also opened the Olympics with a 3-0 win, a more comfortable victory than many would have expected against Australia. The signs were there though.
Aside from a shock 3-0 defeat to Iceland in Euro 2025 qualifying earlier this month, Germany had scored at least three goals in five of their six games going into the Olympics. Make that six out of seven. Marina Hegering opened the scoring in the first half before Lea Schuller and Jule Brand put Germany in full control midway through the second half.
USA Women and Germany Women go head-to-head at 8pm on Sunday 28th July at the Stade de Marseille.
This is a fixture that USA have enjoyed of late, preventing Germany from scoring in three of their past six games. However, Germany finally look to be getting back to their best. That said, their best might still not be enough to beat USA, as both sides may look to play cautiously.
USA Women team news
Despite the hopes of fans, Crystal Dunn started at full-back for USA with Emma Hayes keeping the trend going. Mallory Swanson led the line with Rose Lavelle playing just behind her and Sophia Smith and Trinity Rodman on the flanks.
Smith was taken off in the first half but it is believed to just have been a precaution with the game safe, particularly as Zambia had been reduced to 10 players. But Hayes may still opt to replace Smith, generally opting for caution when it comes to injuries. Lynn Williams replaced Smith against Zambia and may start here.
Germany Women team news
Germany went a bit more orthodox with their starting lineup against Australia, opting for a two-player strike force in a 4-4-2. Schuller was joined by Alexandra Popp in attack, with Laura Freigang dropping to the bench. Jule Brand and Klara Buhl were the flying wingers while Sjoeke Nusken partnering Janina Minge in midfield. Given the success, we probably won’t see any changes for this game, which means Ann-Katrin Berger lines up in goal ahead of Merle Frohms. Berger and Nusken both played for Emma Hayes at Chelsea, for an added story.
USA Women vs Germany Women head-to-head
This is a fixture that USA Women have dominated of late, winning five of their past six meetings. Three of those came without Germany scoring, though DFB-Frauen did get a win just under two years ago.
