Record four-time gold winners, the United States have failed to reach the final in each of the last two Olympics, with their best return during that time a bronze at Tokyo 2020. However, they look on a mission this summer, winning all four of their games in France by a 10-2 combined scoreline. It’s going to take some effort to stop them from here.
One of their victories came against Germany during the group stage by a heavy 4-1 scoreline, with the Stars and Stripes recovering from a 22-minute equaliser to thrash their European counterparts. However, Germany are more recent gold medal winners than the USA, taking the prize at Rio 2016, while aside from that loss to Emma Hayes’ side, they’ve won 3-0 against Australia, 4-1 against Zambia and on penalties against reigning champions Canada.
USA Women team news
Jaedyn Shaw returned to the squad against Japan following a pre-tournament injury and will hope to get some minutes in the semi-final. Hayes will likely field an unchanged starting XI against Germany, however, despite going through extra time in the quarter-finals.
Germany team news
Marina Hegering returned for the win over Canada following muscular problems, while centre-back partner Kathrin-Julia Hendrich also overcame a knock to go the distance. Striker Lea Schüller already has three goals at this tournament and could make the difference for the underdogs.
