Will USA’s domination end?
We’re in the third edition of the Concacaf Nations League, and USA are looking to keep their stranglehold on the competition. The USMNT won the first competition in 2019/20, beating Mexico in the final. before retaining their crown against Canada in 2022/23. As one of the top-ranked teams for Concacaf, USA earned a bye to the quarter-finals, avoiding the group stage.
The second seed, USA were pit against the best-ranked runner-up in the quarter-finals, facing Trinidad and Tobago. They were comfortable in their first leg victory, winning 3-0 but did lose the second leg 2-1. That defeat was a sour end to what had been a strong year for USA, though there was still disappointment. USA fell to defeat on penalties in the semi-finals of the Gold Cup, knocked out by Panama. They did bounce back to win three of their next four games, all friendlies, losing to Germany in the other match. Now USA will not only be hoping to keep hold of the Nations League, but also build momentum ahead of the Copa America this summer.
Jamaica, meanwhile, have been in the Nations League from the start and had to fight through the group stage to book their spot in the semi-finals. This is the first time the Reggae Boyz have made it to the knockout stages of the Nations League, playing in Division B for the first edition and finishing second in their group in the 2022/23 campaign — behind Mexico.
A 2-2 draw with Mexico last year saw Jamaica miss the chance to finish top of the group, and Mexico also knocked the Reggae Boyz out of the Gold Cup in the semi-finals. But Jamaica went unbeaten in their next five games, winning three and drawing one of their four Nations League group games. They were drawn against Canada in the quarter-finals and, after losing the first leg 2-1, eventually got through on away goals thanks to a 3-2 victory in the return fixture.

There’s every chance that this game goes all the way. Although USA have won a lot of their games against Jamaica, the past two meetings have been very even. Most recently, they met at the 2023 Gold Cup, with USA needing an 88th-minute goal from Brandon Vazquez to secure a point.

Given USA’s stature on this side of the world, it’s understandable that they would be favourites for this game. But remember, there is a chance of the match going to extra-time and penalties, so a standard win would only count in 90 minutes.

Luca de la Torre has had to pull out of the USA squad through injury, as has Norwich striker Josh Sargent. This is a full-strength squad after USA handed a lot of debuts in a January friendly against Slovenia.
Jamaica have the likes of Michail Antonio, Demarai Gray and Dobby Decordova-Reid in their squad, but the likes of Kemar Roofe and Leon Bailey did not make the final cut.
