The final hurdle
Both Ukraine and Iceland had to come from behind in their play-off semi-finals, as they kept their Euro 2024 hopes alive. Neither nation had the best qualifying campaign and both had to earn their spots in the play-offs as the best-placed UEFA Nations League group runners-up.
Ukraine had finished second in their UEFA Nations League group behind Scotland, and were just two points behind Steve Clarke’s side. Taking out their two wins over basement-nation Armenia, Ukraine’s five points were enough to be the second-best runner up after Finland. It was a nice fallback to have, as Ukraine were given a tough qualifying group. They finished third behind England and Italy, only dropping below the latter on a head-to-head record, knowing victory in their final game against the Azzurri would have seen them go straight to Euro 2024.
Put in a play-off semi-final against Bosnia and Herzegovina, Ukraine looked to be on their way out, trailing 1-0 with five minutes left to play. But late strikes from Roman Yaremchuk and Artem Dovbyk kept Ukraine’s hopes of a fourth consecutive European Championship alive.
Iceland, meanwhile, finished behind Israel in their Nations League group with four points from four games — drawing all four. That was enough to place them above Norway in the rankings on goal difference, reaching the play-offs at their expense. And it was a good job too. Iceland underwhelmed in qualifying, albeit in a tough group. They finished fourth behind Portugal, Slovakia and Luxembourg, with six of their 10 points coming against Liechtenstein, who lost all 10 of their matches.
There was a Nations League rematch in the play-offs as Iceland were drawn against Israel, who took the lead from the penalty spot. But an Albert Gudmundsson hat-trick and a strike from Arnor Ingvi Traustason completed the comeback to secure what was a comfortable victory in the end.
Ukraine vs Iceland match tip
Ukraine to win and BTTS @ 11/4 by Midnite
Both teams showed what they are capable off in their semi-final comebacks, with Ukraine keeping a pretty good run going. Ukraine have only lost two games since the start of 2023, a 2-0 defeat to England in their opening match of the year, and 2-1 loss to Italy that would ultimately scupper their hopes of qualifying automatically for Euro 2024. But since that game, Ukraine have gone unbeaten in five, winning against North Macedonia, Malta, Lechia Gdansk and, of course, Bosnia and Herzegovina. Their only failure to win during that run was a goalless draw with Italy. However, Iceland know their way to goal, scoring in 10 of their last 13 matches.
Ukraine vs Iceland odds
Although Ukraine went so close to exiting at the semi-final stage, they are quite comfortably favourites for this game. As well as being the bigger footballing nation, Ukraine’s odds won’t have been hurt by the fact that they did go toe-to-toe with England and Italy last year, with two draws from four games.
Ukraine vs Iceland team news
Roman Yaremchuk came off the bench to make a match-winning impact against Bosnia and Herzegovina, so will be pushing for a start.
Arnor Sigurdsson has had to pull out of the Ukraine squad due to injury.
