Turkey vs Portugal latest prediction
Before the tournament even started, this stood out as a game to watch. It’s a clash between one of the pre-tournament favourites at a team that disappointed in the last edition of the European Championship despite being labelled as dark horses. And there’s now a lot more on the line.
Turkey have already bettered their performance at Euro 2020, opening this summer’s tournament with a 3-1 win over Georgia. It was a thrilling game for the neutral, with two teams going blow-for-blow as if it were an FA Cup clash. Turkey eventually came out on top thanks to goals from Mert Mulder, Arda Guler and Kerem Akturkoglu. It was the first ever time Turkey had won their opening match at a European Championship, having lost each of their previous five such games.
In the group’s other game, 2016 champions Portugal also got off to a winning start, though it was in dramatic fashion. Roberto Martinez’s men went 1-0 down to Czech Republic in the second half and only managed to equalise through an own goal. As the game looked headed for a draw, Francisco Conceicao came off the bench to score the winner within 111 seconds. He was the first Portugal player to score as a substitute at the European Championship since Eder in the 2016 final.
So now, these two sides meet first and second respectively. Victory for either would surely secure qualification for the last 16 and, in all probability, top spot.
Turkey and Portugal face off on 22nd June at the Westfalenstadion in Dortmund.
Portugal went full-on attack against Czech Republic in their opening game despite needing an own goal and a late strike to secure the win. Martinez’s men lead the competition for corners after the first round of fixtures, with 13 in total. To make that even more remarkable, they didn’t concede a single one themselves. At the same time, Turkey won five corners and conceded five in their win over Georgia.

Turkey latest team news
Kenan Yildiz showed his versatility against Georgia, starting on the wing with Baris Alper Yilmaz leading the line. Arda Guler was also pushed out to the right flank to allow Orkun Kokcu to play in an advanced position. However, given the opposition, there may be some changes. We could see Kokcu drop deeper to play alongside Calhanoglu, with Guler moving central and Kerem Akturkoglu on the left — pushing Yildiz to the right.
Portugal latest team news
Martinez opted for a back three against Czech Republic, but he mostly does that to match the opponent’s system. With Turkey playing in a back four, we could see Portugal return to one too, with Nuno Mendes the likely player to drop out from the centre-backs. That would leave Pepe and Ruben Dias as the centre-back partnership, flanked by Joao Cancelo and Diogo Dalot.
In midfield, Joao Palhinha is the most likely to come in, sitting just behind Vitinha and Bruno Fernandes. There shouldn’t be any changes to the front three of Rafael Leao, Bernardo Silva and Cristiano Ronaldo.
Turkey vs Portugal head-to-head
This has been a regular fixture at the Euros, with the most recent meeting at this competition a 2-0 win for Portugal during the Euro 2008 group stages — a match in which Cristiano Ronaldo played. The most recent meeting between these nations was Portugal’s 3-1 win to seal their place at the 2022 World Cup.
