Switzerland vs Spain prediction: La Roja continue title defence

Spain and Switzerland continue their Uefa Nations League A campaigns with a clash in Geneva on Sunday.

Spain are the defending champions after beating Croatia on penalties in the 2022/23 Nations League final following a 0-0 draw. As for Switzerland, they finished third in Group A2, finishing a comfortable five points above the relegated Czech Republic, and only one and two points behind Portugal and Spain, respectively, in what was a competitive showing.

Three predictions for Switzerland vs Spain

Switzerland 1-2 Spain (15/2 with Boylesports)

Spain won their last three games at Euro 2024 by a 2-1 scoreline and will look to return to that form following a disappointing 0-0 draw with Serbia on Thursday.

Dani Olmo anytime goalscorer (3/1 with Paddy Power)

Dani Olmo has scored six goals in his last 11 caps for Spain.

BTTS (11/10 with Matchbook)

Despite their summer success, Spain failed to keep a clean sheet in any of their four knockout games at Euro 2024. Both teams have scored in three of the last four meetings between Switzerland and Spain.

How both teams go into Switzerland vs Spain

Everything is coming up for Spain right now. Already the defending Uefa Nations League champions, La Roja spent the summer sweeping away all before them, winning Euro 2024 in Germany before following that up with a gold medal success at the Paris Olympics. It’s hard to imagine anyone stopping Luis de la Fuente’s men right now. Indeed, Spain could be setting themselves up for a period of dominance similar to that enjoyed by the likes of Gerard Pique, Sergio Busquets and Cesc Fabregas over a decade ago.

That said, kicking off their Nations League defence with a 0-0 draw in Serbia wouldn’t have been in the playbook, so De la Fuente will be coming down hard on his players to make sure there’s no complacency.

As for Switzerland, they had a modest Euro 2024 campaign, beating Hungary 3-1 in their opening group game before drawing with Scotland and Germany. They did go 1-0 up against England in the round of 16, only to see Bukayo Saka quickly equalise before the Three Lions won on penalties. Murat Yakin’s side lost 2-0 to Denmark in their opening match, so will be looking for a positive result on home soil despite the illustrious standard of opposition.

Switzerland latest team news

Switzerland have named a strong squad that includes Granit Xhaka, Manuel Akanji and talismanic forward Breel Embolo. However, there’s no more Xherdan Shaqiri after the former Liverpool and Bayern Munich forward announced his retirement following Switzerland’s exit from Euro 2024.

Spain latest team news

Spain are missing a few big names for this international break, including Alvaro Morata, Mikel Oyarzabal and Unai Simon, while Jesus Navas has retired from international duty. Rodri is in the squad, but De la Fuente may not risk him given he’s still working his way back to full fitness. Pep Guardiola wouldn’t appreciate his star midfielder returning to Manchester City injured.
