How both teams go into Spain vs Netherlands
It’s been a bit of a grind for the Netherlands since their run to the Euro 2024 semi-finals, winning just two of their six Uefa Nations League group matches. However, a 1-0 loss away against Germany was their only defeat, meaning they qualified for the quarter-finals in second place.
Spain, meanwhile, have built on their Euro 2024 triumph. La Roja drew 0-0 in Serbia in their first Nations League group match but since then, they’ve won five out of five to top their group, eight points clear of Denmark in second.
The tie is in the balance following a 2-2 draw in the first leg, with Spain hoping home advantage will see them through.
Netherlands team news
Netherlands announced their squad and there are a host of Premier League stars involved including Virgil van Dijk, Jurrien Timber, Ryan Gravenberch, Cody Gakpo and Justin Kluivert.
Spain team news
There are also a handful of Premier League players involved in the Spain squad, with David Raya, Marc Cucurella, Pedro Porro and Mikel Merino.
Bournemouth defender Dean Huijsen represented the Netherlands from U16 to U19 level but now has seven U21 caps to his name for Spain, declaring that nation as his ‘home’. La Roja capped him in the first leg of the tie, tying him to Spain for the future.
Spain vs Netherlands head-to-head
As mentioned, Netherlands haven’t lost in normal time against Spain since 1983. However, their one overall defeat in that time was the famous 1-0 loss in extra-time in the 2010 World Cup final, when Andres Iniesta scored in the 116th minute after Arjen Robben had missed a huge chance.
