The showdown between Spain and Italy occurs on June 20 at Veltins-Arena, Gelsenkirchen

Italy, meanwhile, seeks to defend its title and secure its third European Championships crown this summer. The Azzurri won Euro 2020 but faced challenges such as missing the World Cup and changing its manager. Despite this, they finished third in the Uefa Nations League and secured a second-place finish in their qualifying group for this tournament. With a strong tournament history, including winning the World Cup in 2006, Italy faces high expectations at this year’s event in Germany.

Both teams know the best third-placed teams will advance to the knockout stages. If one team loses, they will remain optimistic, as there is still a chance to advance.

Spain Latest Team News

Luis de la Fuente, now coaching Spain’s senior squad, has previously worked with the U19s, U21s, and the U23s. He has the advantage of the players already being familiar with his coaching style. The full-backs will be crucial in his setup, with players like Alex Grimaldo, Dani Carvajal, and Marc Cucurella providing options for playing advanced roles. In addition to Rodri, the midfield boasts talented players such as Pedri, Fabian Ruiz, and Mikel Merino. Alvaro Morata is expected to lead the line-up front, supported by Nico Williams, Ferran Torres, Dani Olmo, and Lamine Yamal. In goal, Unai Simon is likely to maintain his position, although he faces competition from Alex Remiro and David Raya.

Italy Latest Team News

Luciano Spalletti has been trying out a three-at-the-back formation in recent friendlies, but it’s unlikely to become permanent. The 4-3-3 formation that got Italy to the tournament seems to be the most balanced, allowing them to utilize their talented central midfielders. The Azzurri will focus on maintaining possession, but they can also absorb pressure and launch counterattacks with players like Barella and Davide Frattesi.

Spain vs Italy Head-to-Head

Meetings between these Mediterranean rivals have often been historic. Three previous encounters occurred during the FIFA World Cup, including a notorious 1994 match where Mauro Tassotti and Luis Enrique clashed, leaving the latter bloodied. Spain ended their penalty shootout curse against Italy at Euro 2008, then defended their European title by defeating Italy 4-0 in Kyiv four years later. Italy got some revenge by defeating Spain at Euro 2016 and 2020, with the most recent victory coming on their way to winning the tournament. However, in their two recent clashes, Spain came out narrowly on top with 2-1 wins in the UEFA Nations League, which Luis de la Fuente’s men won the most recent edition of that competition.
