Southampton vs Newcastle prediction, odds, tips & team news

Newcastle United will continue their fight for a top four finish when they travel to St Mary’s to face Southampton on Saturday 25th January at 3pm. The Magpies sit two points outside the top four after 22 games and have won eight of their last nine across all formats. Southampton, meanwhile, remain rooted to the bottom of the table and have just six points on the board as we approach February.
Alexander Isak to Score (10/11 with bet365)
It may seem like an obvious selection to put up Alexander Isak to score against a side that has accrued just six Premier League points this season, but at 10/11, this looks a price well worth taking. It’s worth noting that other firms are considerably shorter, with William Hill going 1/2 and BetVictor just 2/5.
Bet365 is the firm that has the best-price on the Swedish international scoring on Saturday. Prior to the defeat against Bournemouth last week, Isak had scored in eight consecutive league matches and has 15 league goals in total this term. He’s scored 13 goals in just 12 Premier League appearances against promoted sides, netting a hat-trick against Ipswich just before Christmas.
Anthony Gordon to Score & Taylor Harwood-Bellis to be Carded (12/1 with Sky Bet)
Southampton players have made 17 errors leading to a goal in the Premier League this season and Anthony Gordon can be the latest player to take advantage of such porous defence. Gordon has scored in three of his last five for the Magpies and should be shorter than 7/4 in the market.
Southampton’s Flynn Downes has the most yellow cards in the league this term with nine, but he is closely followed by his teammate Taylor Harwood-Bellis, who has seven. With Downes priced at 7/4 and Harwood-Bellis at 9/2, I feel the gap between the two in the market is too big. With seven yellows in 20 appearances and up against a tricky Newcastle backline, he looks a great proposition. Combining him to be carded with Gordon to score pays 12/1.

How both teams go into Southampton vs Newcastle
We’re into the second half of the 2024-25 Premier League season and things are looking bleak for Southampton. Saints are rock bottom of the table and look likely to return to the Championship immediately. Russell Martin has been sacked and replaced by Ivan Juric, but that managerial change hasn’t bore any fruit yet. Four of Southampton’s six point so far have come at home, but they have also lost eight games at St Mary’s. So it isn’t a happy home.
Newcastle have put last season firmly behind them. The Magpies missed out on European football but that has only allowed them to fully focus on their league finish this year. While there have been some rocky moments this season, Newcastle are in a good place right now. Eddie Howe’s men have won nine of their last ten matches across all competitions, with the only blemish on that record being the shock 4-1 home defeat to Bournemouth last weekend.
Southampton team news
Aaron Ramsdale faces a late fitness test after picking up a knock on the training ground this week. Ross Stewart, Tyler Dibling, Jack Stephens and Kamaldeen Sulemana are all confirmed absentees.
Newcastle team news
Callum Wilson, Jamaal Lascelles and Emil Krafth are the only confirmed absentees. Nick Pope is nearing a return but is unlikely to start on the south coast.
Southampton vs Newcastle head-to-head
Newcastle have won their past six games against Southampton across all competitions. The Magpies are also unbeaten in eight since a 2-0 win for Southampton in November 2020.
