Southampton vs Brentford

Southampton and Brentford head-to-head in the Premier League on Saturday, 4th January, at 3pm (UK time). Both teams have lost four and drawn one of their last five matches and both arrive here on a poor run of form. Check out our best bets from Anthony Eadson, including a player to be carded at 9/1.

Brentford Double Chance & Bryan Mbeumo 1+ Shot on Target (11/10 with Sky Bet)

Only Southampton have a worse away record than Brentford, but despite picking up just two points on the road on this season, The Bees can take something from the South Coast on Saturday.

Southampton have picked up just one win and six points in 19 games in the Premier League this season (W1 D3 L15). Only one team has ever won six points through their opening 20 games of a campaign, with Sunderland doing so in 2005-06 (6), going on to finish bottom with 15 points.

Bryan Mbuemo has been one of the stand-out performers for Brentford this season and has already eclipsed his best tally for goals in a single top-flight campaign. Mbeumo has 11 goals in 19 starts and has hit the target at least once in four of his last five.

Adam Armstrong to be Carded (9/1 with Sky Bet)

I’m a little baffled by the 9/1 that is available for Adam Armstrong to be carded in this match. Sky Bet are nearly double the price of any other bookmaker on this selection, and although he was only shown four cards in all competitions last season, he already has six to his name this time round. In just seven starts on home soil this term, Armstrong has been shown four yellow cards, with one of those being in the League Cup clash with Stoke City. At 9/1 he looks simply too big a price.

How both teams go into Southampton vs Brentford

Southampton remain rooted to the foot of the Premier League table with just one win and six points on the board after 18 games. Russel Martin has been sacked, replaced by Ivan Juric who has lost his first two matches in charge of the club. Six previous managers have lost their opening three league games with the Saints, most recently Nathan Jones in the 2022-23 campaign.

Brentford are in the midst of a worrying run of form, losing four of their last five matches across all competitions, winning just three of their last ten. Thomas Frank’s men are 12th in the Premier League.

Southampton team news

Gavin Bazunu and Juan Larios won’t return until mid-January, but Southampton should have Will Smallbone could return for this match. Mateus Fernandes is suspended while Flynn Downes is currently being assessed.

Brentford team news

Brentford remain without a host of first-team players, including Aaron Hickey, Ethan Pinnock, Rico Henry and Sepp van den Berg. Frank will hope a couple of those will return to action for this match, alongside Thiago Rodrigues and Mads Roerslev.

Southampton vs Brentford head-to-head

As mentioned, Brentford have won their last four meetings against Southampton and have lost just one of their last six across all competitions.
