Leeds finding form at the right time

With 10 games left to play of the regular Championship season, Leeds are in the play-off places. However, they will feel confident of securing automatic promotion. Daniel Farke’s side are third, just two points behind second-placed Ipswich Town and only five off league leaders Leicester.

Leeds suffered a little in December, going on a run of just one win in five games, including three defeats — they were beaten back-to-back by Preston and West Brom post-Christmas. However, since the turn of 2024, Leeds have been formidable. Actually, they’ve been almost perfect. Leeds have won 10 of their 11 games in the Championship this year, only failing in a draw with Huddersfield, with Patrick Bamford securing a point with his second-half goal.

It’s a run that has lifted Leeds to within touching difference of automatic promotion, even breaking into the top two before their draw with Huddersfield, and included a 3-1 win over Leicester. They were going strong in the FA Cup too, making it to the fifth round and only losing out to a late goal in a 3-2 defeat against Chelsea.

At the other end of the table, Sheffield Wednesday are also in good form, and it’s boosted their chances of safety. The Owls have won five of their last six games in the Championship, only losing to league leaders Leicester. Crucially, they’re beating the teams around them too, with wins over Birmingham, Millwall, Rotherham and Plymouth.

The victory against Plymouth last time out moved Sheffield Wednesday onto 38 points, level with three other teams. Goal difference currently has Sheffield Wednesday in the relegation zone, but it’s so close. And it’s not just the teams tied on 38 points. Sheffield Wednesday after two points behind 16th-placed Plymouth, four off Swansea in 15th and only six behind 12th-placed Watford. This is a ridiculous relegation battle in the Championship, and it’s one our eyes will be glued to for the remainder of the season, starting with this game.

Sheffield Wednesday vs Leeds match tip

Georginio Rutter 1+ assists @ 9/4 by Sky Bet

When Leeds signed Georginio Rutter last January, the hope would have been for him to score goals to keep them in the Premier League. That didn’t happen, but this season he is definitely doing his bit to get Leeds back into the top flight. But he’s not scoring them. Although Rutter has scored six goals this season, more impressive is his 13 assists. Only Ipswich’s Leif Davis (14) has more assists in the Championship this season than Rutter, and Sheffield Wednesday will have to keep their eye on him.

Despite Sheffield Wednesday’s winning run, Leeds are the heavy favourites here. And it’s understandable. Leeds’ unbeaten run eclipses Sheffield Wednesday’s in the Championship, stretching back to the start of 2024. They’ve also won 10 of those 11 league games and will be expected to make it 11 from 12 at Hillsborough.
