Sheffield United vs Wrexham prediction: Red Dragons looking to cause first-round upset

Sheffield United vs Wrexham latest prediction

Sheffield United had a tough return to the Premier League and finished at the bottom. Chris Wilder was re-installed as manager midway through last season. Now, the team aims to return to the top flight quickly. They will begin their Championship campaign with an away game against Preston North End, followed by their EFL Cup campaign a few days later. In the 2023/24 season, Lincoln City knocked them out on penalties in the second round of the EFL Cup. The club’s best performances in the tournament came in the 2014/15 and 2002/03 seasons when they reached the semi-finals.

Over the past few years, Wrexham, with their famous ownership, has made significant progress in English football. They have moved up from the National League and League Two, with just one more promotion needed to reach the second tier. The Red Dragons will kick off their League One campaign by hosting Wycombe Wanderers, followed by an away game against Sheffield United a few days later. In the previous EFL Cup, Bradford City eliminated them in the second round on penalties. Wrexham’s best cup run was in 1977/78 when they reached the Quarter-Finals.

Sheffield United face Wrexham at 8pm (UK time) on Tuesday 13th August at Bramall Lane.

Sheffield United 2-1 Wrexham @ 15/2 with Bet365

As hosts, Sheffield United start as favourites. They haven’t looked defensively assured in pre-season, and that will give Wrexham an opportunity to score a goal. However, Sheffield United should do enough to secure passage into the next round.

Over 2.5 goals @ 8/15 with BetGoodwin

Sheffield United has seen over 2.5 goals in four of their five pre-season matches. In the meantime, Wrexham had three matches from five played with more than that number of goals.

Kieffer Moore to score anytime @ 6/4 with Bet365

Kieffer Moore is among the many who joined the Blades this summer. He brings a wealth of experience and is expected to lead the line. We’re backing him to break his EFL Cup duck, with the veteran Welsh marksman having never scored in this competition from 11 previous appearances.

Sheffield United team news

Harry Souttar and Alfie Gilchrist have joined from Premier League clubs Leicester and Chelsea on loan respectively. Harrison Burrows and Kieffer Moore cost a fee, while Callum O’Hare, Jamie Shackleton, and Sam McCallum joined via free agency. On the flip side, Cameron Archer, Jayden Bogle, and Bénie Traoré have left, while Oli McBurnie and Wes Foderingham departed after their contracts expired.

Wrexham team news

George Dobson, Callum Burton, and Arthur Okonkwo have joined Wrexham as free agents. Okonkwo comes from Arsenal, while several players have left the club after their deals weren’t renewed.
