It was a perfect start to their Premier League title defence and the quest for a historic four in a row for Manchester City as they beat Burnley 3-0 in their first away trip of the season. Although they ended the 2022/23 Premier League season on the road with a draw against Brighton and defeat to Brentford, Man City have won 12 of their last 20 away league games, with no team gaining more away points since the start of the previous campaign. Of course, Man City have played a game more than some, but their 40 away points is only closely contested by Arsenals’s 39 from 19 matches.
A win here would see Pep Guardiola break José Mourinho’s record (326 games) and become the fastest manager to reach 200 wins in Premier League history (269 games) and become just the sixth manager in the history of the competition to achieve this milestone, even though he won’t be there in person, as he continues to recover from back surgery in Barcelona.
Sheffield United, meanwhile, marked their Premier League return with a home defeat to Crystal Palace so this game will be all about getting up and running at Bramall Lane. In the Championship last season, Sheffield United won 16 of their 13 league games at Bramall Lane but the last time they were in the Premier League they lost 11 home matches, winning seven and drawing the other one.

In their opening day win over Burnley, Man City were rocked by yet another injury to Kevin De Bruyne, with the Belgian confirmed to be out for a few months. However, they may welcome back Ruben Dias and John Stones after they missed the opening weekend. Bernardo Silva has missed the last few matches through illness but should at least return to the bench.
Julián Álvarez is looking to start once more after scoring the only goal of the game last time out against Newcastle, while new signing Jeremy Doku, who recently joined from Rennes will go straight into the squad. The Belgian completed more take-ons per 90 (6.72) than any other player in Eruope’s top seven divisions last season and will be another incredible addition to Pep Guadiola’s treble winners but City assistant Juanma Lillo has been careful not to put too much responsibility on his shoulders.
