Scotland vs Portugal prediction, stats, tips & team news

Scotland’s Uefa Nations League A future could be on the line when they face Portugal on Tuesday 15th October.

Steve Clarke’s men have all three of their matches in the competition so far, while Portugal have three wins from three.

Portugal to Win & BTTS (9/4 with BetMGM)

After blanking at Euro 2024, Cristiano Ronaldo re-found his shooting boots in the Uefa Nations League. The Al Nassr forward has scored in both of Portugal’s two games in the Uefa Nations League so far, including the late winner when these sides last met.

Correct Score: Scotland 1-2 Portugal (7/1 with BetMGM)

Both teams have scored in all six combined matches Scotland and Portugal have played in this latest Nations League campaign. Since their opening game of the European Championships last summer, Scotland have not been beaten by more than one goal, and with Portugal having won two of their last three outings with a scoreline of 2-1, the 7/1 looks a backable price with BetMGM.

This game could be make or break for Scotland. Steve Clarke’s men entered the October international break without a point in the Uefa Nations League and staring relegation in the face. After defeat to Croatia on Saturday, things re now looking very bleak and they will now face group leaders Portugal. There has been a change to the format of the Uefa Nations League, which means the top two sides in a League A group will go through to the knockout stages. The third-placed side will face the relegation play-offs, while the bottom nation will automatically drop to League B.

At the moment, Scotland are that basement nation and could be set for an immediate return to League B. It’s a tough group for Scotland, alongside Portugal, Croatia and Poland, and their three defeats so far have been agonising. Clarke’s men lost to both Portugal and Poland via late goals, the latter coming deep into injury time, while they took the lead in Zagreb and went on to lose the match 2-1.

Portugal, meanwhile, will be hoping they can become the first country to win the Uefa Nations League twice. The Selecao das Quinas won the inaugural Uefa Nations League, but haven’t made it to the semi-finals since. Portugal have finished second in their group in each of the past two Uefa Nations League campaigns, finishing behind France and Spain respectively — both eventual winners.

With the top two sides qualifying for the knockout stages, Portugal will feel extra confident about making it out the group this year. Roberto Martinez’s men have won all three outings of this latest campaign and are aiming to book their place in the quarter-finals on Tuesday.

Scotland host Portugal at Hampden Park on Tuesday 15th October at 7:45pm.

Scotland team news

Four uncapped players are in Scotland’s squad for the October fixtures, with Jon McCracken, Nicky Devlin, Liam Lindsay, and Andy Irving hoping for their debuts. Zander Clark, Scott McKenna, Josh Doig, Max Johnston, John McGinn, Connor Barron, and Tommy Conway have all dropped out of the September squad.

But there are returns for Greg Taylor, James Forrest and Che Adams after injury ruled them out last month.

Portugal team news

Goncalo Ramos is still out injured for Paris Saint-Germain and won’t be called up for the Portugal squad. Danilo Pereira has found game time following his move to Al Ittihad so could be in contention for a recall, as could Joao Cancelo.

Scotland vs Portugal head-to-head

Portugal’s 2-1 win last month extended their unbeaten run against Scotland to seven games. But only three of those came this century, with matches few and far between. Overall, Portugal lead this fixture with nine wins to Scotland’s four, alongside three draws.
