As this is both teams’ second match, there is a chance that qualification could be on the line. For Scotland, it would be the first time that thye have qualified out of the group stage of any major international football tournament. By contrast, Switzerland are serial qualifiers, indeed, they have made it to the knockout rounds in every major international tournament since 2014, that is five in a row.

The above statistics demonstrate the difference in experience between the two footballing nations and one would expect this experience to be a key factor at this stage. With a positive result required from the match to put themselves in a great place for qualification one would expect Switzerland to up their game and produce something close to their best.

Scotland and Switzerland meet in the second game of the second round of Euro 2024 group stage fixtures on June 19 at the the Cologne Stadium in Cologne at 8pm.

Scotland qualified for the finals by finishing second in their qualification group.  It was their first automatic qualification for a finals since the 1998 World Cup, and they achieved it very early on thanks to an excellent winning streak at the beginning of the campaign. Momentum has slowed somewhat since then though and a boost may be required here.

Switzerland, meanwhile, also finished second in their qualification group, somewhat surprisingly, to Romania. Nevertheless the Swiss are proving to be very consistent in qualifying for major tournaments having only missed Euro 2012 and 2002 World Cup finals in this century.

Scotland Latest Team News

Much could depend on the results from the opening matches in terms of team news for the second game, but the 3-4-3/5-2-2-1 system is likely to remain in place, at least to begin with.

Expect to see much of Scotland’s play coming down the left, with Kieran Tierney, if fit, overlapping Andy Robertson, while McGinn and McTominay will share the responsibility of making late runs into the box. Bologna midfielder Lewis Ferguson will be a massive miss in midfield, so the task of keeping the back door shut and trying to add a little composure in possession will likely fall to Brighton’s Billy Gilmour. Ryan Christie has also shown the versatility to play deeper with Bournemouth this season.

Dykes, shown in the illustrative line-up graphic below, was the most likely starter up-front but has been ruled out after suffering a training ground injury on Friday. Che Adams is a potential replacement.

Switzerland Latest Team News

There is a lot of versatility in the Swiss forward line heading into the tournament. If Zeki Amdouni has a good opener against Hungary then he should keep his place in a fluid 4-3-3.

Xherdan Shaqiri will look to play as often as possible just off the main forward. and with a quality midfield three in Remo Freuler, Granit Xhaka, and Denis Zakaria, the captain will have a lot of licence to roam and cause trouble.

Manuel Akanji and Fabian Schar provide an all Premier League central defensive pairing of some ability, whilst veteran Ricardo Rodriguez will be hoping to set some records for longevity at left-back. Yann Sommer has been a lock in goal for Switzerland for over a decade as well.

Scotland vs Switzerland Head to Head

This is a fixture that has been rarely seen in international circles over the last few years. It is unknown to Squawka whether there is some secret emnity between the Scottish and Swiss FAs but there have only been two meetings between the countries in the last thirty years. Once in a friendly in 2006, which Switzerland won, and also in the group stages of Euro ’96 where Ally McCoist winner looked like taking Scotland through, until England conceded a late consolation goal to Holland in their famous 4-1 win.
