Scotland and Hungary meet in the final round of fixtures on June 23 at the the Stuttgart Arena in Stuttgart at 8pm.

Scotland finished second in their qualification group, with qualification for the tournament wrapped up pretty early thanks to a five match winning streak to begin the campaign. Eventually, the Scots fell behind Spain but had done enough for their first automatic qualification to a major finals since the 1998 World Cup.

Hungary qualified top of their qualification group. This is a rare feat in modern Hungarian football, the Magyars hadn’t topped a qualification group since the 1986 World Cup.

Scotland Latest Team News

Unless Scotland have taken four, or who knows, six points from their matches against Germany and Switzerland, then they will need a result here to give them a chance of qualification.

Therefore, it is likely that any rotation will be kept to a minimum, this is Scotland’s final.

With Lyndon Dykes’ injury, we are likely to see Che Adams start and hopefully he will be able to provide the platform for Scotland to build their attacks. The two players most likely to provide something going forward for Scotland are John McGinn and Scott McTominay just in behind the front man.

Scotland are going to be a very well structured team with two players in the deep pivot and three strong central defenders. This will allow attacking width to come from the wing-backs, a role that Andy Robertson, in particular, should relish.

Hungary Latest Team News

Again, depending on results, there could be some Hungarian rotation, but with some form of qualification benefit on the line, whether it is automatic qualification or the difference between group winners or second place, there is likely to be something for Hungary to play for in this game.

Reaching the knockout stages is something that Hungary will expect to do this time having qualified so impressively and also performed well in the Nations League prior to that, so if qualification is still in doubt heading into this match then a strong XI will be put out for the match.

This will mean that the likes of Dominik Szoboszlai will feature prominently in a probable 3-5-2 or 3-4-3 formation, which will also include Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez on the left.

Scotland vs Hungary Head to Head

A rarely played international fixture rounds off Scotland’s group stage with a first meeting with Hungary since a 2018 friendly. Before that friendly, which Scotland won 1-0, the two nations hadn’t played each other since 2004, which, in turn, was the first time since the 1980s. The nations have followed a similar path in having their heydays in the 20th century and then becoming resurgent again in modern times.
