Netherlands will hope to get things up and running at Euro 2024 when they face Romania in the last 16.

Romania vs Netherlands Euro 2024 prediction: A chance for Oranje to prove themselves

Romania vs Netherlands latest prediction

No one expected this matchup to happen in the last 16, with shock results on both sides of the tie. While Netherlands weren’t expected to top Group D, many predictions had them finish second to France. The opened their group with a win over Poland and actually sat top after two matches, following their draw with France.

Netherlands’ destiny was in their own hands but a 3-2 loss to Austria in their final game saw the Oranje drop from top to third. Fortunately their four points were more than enough to seal passage as one of the best third-placed teams. In fact, they were the best, finishing top of that mini-table by way of their disciplinary record against Georgia’s.

Romania, meanwhile, were placed in a very even Group E alongside Belgium, Slovakia and Ukraine but they weren’t favoured to win. Some even had them going out at the group stage.

In the end, the group was as even as it could get, with all four teams finishing on four points. Romania won their opening game 3-0 against Ukraine in what was a shock result, but then lost 2-0 to Belgium. They then had to come from behind to secure a point against Slovakia in their final game, putting Romania top of the group on goals scored.

Romania and Netherlands face off in the last 16 of Euro 2024 at 5pm on Tuesday 2nd July, with the game to be played at the Allianz Arena in Munich.

Netherlands have scored four goals at Euro 2024 so far, with two coming against Austria and two against Poland. Two of those goals have been scored by Cody Gakpo, who has shown up to make his mark on the tournament.

The Liverpool forward is now looking to become the sixth Dutchman to score at least three goals in a single edition of the European Championship. He’d join famous names like Marco van Basten, Dennis Bergkamp, Patrick Kluivert, Ruud van Nistelrooy and Georginio Wijnaldum.

Romania latest team news

Romania boss Edward Iordanescu has been pretty set on his players at Euro 2024 so far, only making two changes to his starting XI.

Florinel Coman was one of the two players not to start every game, but you’d expect him feature from the off here. However, one player that will not feature is Nicusor Bancu, who received his second yellow card of the tournament in Romania’s 1-1 draw with Slovakia.

That causes an issue with Romania not having any other left-footed defenders, but Vasile Mogos has played at left-back for Romania so he could come in here.

Netherlands latest team news

Netherlands have reverted to their 4-3-3 for Euro 2024, and their back four looks pretty settled. Nathan Ake has been pushed over to the left, with Virgil van Dijk and Stefan de Vrij the centre-back pairing. On the other flank, Denzel Dumfries has been getting the nod.

Xavi Simons started the defeat to Austria on the bench but was brought on before half-time as Netherlands struggled. So he’s expected to start from the off now, potentially ahead of Joey Veerman, with Tijjani Reijnders dropping deeper.

Romania vs Netherlands head-to-head

These two nations have played 13 times in total, with Romania managing just one win so far. Since that victory in Euro 2008 qualifying, Netherlands have won their past four games against Romania, including one at Euro 2008.
